I just finished a book called "Star shells, Condoms, & Ka-Bars" by Harry Pearce (Leathers Publishing). He was a demo man in the 4th Marine division during the invasions of the Marshall islands, Saipan and Tinian, and Iwo Jima. He tells some amazing combat stories very candidly.
For example, A machine gunner trying to break through japanese lines by riding a bicyle with a 30 cal machine gun strapped to the handlebars.
A older Marine who found his son (also a Marine fighting on the same island) tourtured by the japanese going into a frenzy and charging into a cave with only a Ka-Bar and piling up bodies outside.
His participation in "The Second Pearl Harbor"
His capture of a japanese admiral.
Really amazing and sadly brutal stuff. A must read for anyone who wants a true to life unvarnished picture of fighting in the Pacific. Just thought I'd pass the tip along!
