Hi people, as you know by now, our Armed Forces have acquire a number of Leopard2A4s from Germany.
Finally we have a good and solid MBT.
My question is, what brand carries Leopard2A4 kits?

Its a leopard2a4 alrite but Im not too sure about the colors Dan.
Let's wait and see how the armour will mod the leopard. personally, a plain temasek green leopard looks ugly.

Revell Germany/Italeri offer the Leo 2A4 in 1/35th scale (same kit, different decals). That said, it is a slight update of the Leopard 2A3 kit that Italeri released in 1983, and shows its age. Hobby Boss has announced a brand new one for the coming year, which might be an improvement.

Just wanna share some of the photo taken at the recent Army Open House at PLC. Too bad the interior of the MBT is not open to public.

a little off topic: i went to the army open house and was well impressed by the leopard! felt smaller than i imagined but definitely intimidating, i was hoping they had the old AMX13 based tank on display for a side by side comparison

yup, the plain paint scheme is ugly and they forgot to "weather" the tracks with rust and pigments!

anyway i enjoyed my visit to the open house, anybody have more pics? would be good if someone can start a thread on that

yeah, i felt its quite small too.
but my fellow modeller, i don't think this will be the final version. i think there will be some upgrades on them.
but for now, its the original leo 2a4

Hi guys, am trying to pick up a hobby which i left behind donkey years ago when i was still a teenager...so you probably have an idea how old i am!!! But am seriously thinking of building AFVs from WWII esp those from the German army. Basically would like the bros here to advise me on the following:

1. Think i need to brush up on my building skills so a place to pick up a book would really help!

2. A reliable shop to go to....cos i went to a jap owned hobby shop near Selegie n they werent very helpful..

3. Some advise on basic equipment setup that i may need, stuff like paints, brushes, airbrush systems etc without burning a hole in my pocket!!

Any help will be much appreciated bros!! Many thanks in advance!!

1.) a book, it's hard to pinpoint any particular book, i myself started with shep paine's book, but this was published ages ago, a bit old but still very relevant as an all around book. Old in the sense that there are tons of new techniques and kits that has appeared since that book was published. Osprey has some basic beginner and intermediate how to modelling books and if you want to target how to model specific tanks then, Osprey would be a good way to start.

2.)as for the shop, the problem is that the shop in selegie that you mentioned probably is more geared towards planes, for armor, go across the road to sunshine plaza (it's opposite NAFA along bencoolen street, with its back facing the empty lot in front of peace center) - there are a bunch of model shops there 2 specialising in armor and 2 in gundam stuff...those armor shops usually have modellers hanging out building models and are quite well stocked - so it would be a great place to pick up some advice on getting started again.

good luck! and welcome back

btw, sorry for deviating off topic, 'totenkorp' its better to move this discussion to a new thread

I have been to the AOH too, some of you may have seen me blocking your view (sorry! :-) from time to time.

Well, there's a reason why the MBT interior is not shown... One reason is they've added something to it that they do not want the public to see (but we all know that's too early to happen now), so the other reason is... go figure! :-)

Btw, having fun with some schemes on our A4s:

Or are they too icky for your tastes?

Hi guys,

The kit to have in 1/72 is Dragon. In 1/35, go for Hobbyboss - not a perfect kit (a lot of simplified details) but I believe it's a lot easier to build than Revell/Italeri/Testor. Hull wise, it's similar to Tamiya kit's breakdown in parts and assembly. Turret wise, it follow's Revell/Italeri but made some improvements (positionable mantlet). Plus the anti-skid areas are more up-to-date (reflected by later batches of 2 A4s).

The HB kit has a lot more to go if you want to bring it up to "perfection". If you're interested to know, I can point to you the areas that needed major improvements. Not hard to do, just need extra time and patience, but that's what modelling is about.

If I were you guys, I'd keep a Tamiya 2A6 / HB 2A6, EX kits handy, as you'll need some of the parts not found in HB's 2A4... I'm refering to upgrades... *hint hint*...

Lovely!! With kill ring also! OMG!
1st camo looks like the Indian T-72. Very funky and all.
The 2nd hard edge splinter. I love that.
3rd the ambush camo.
Personally i love the ambush. Kinda suit the tropical season here.

Hmmm... you mean the Arjun (Indian Leopard 2 lookalike)? Well, when I first started this scheme, my inspiration came from the Berlin Brigade's urban camo. And the French took it a bit further with this concept on several of their vehicles (one of Concord's modern AFV references featured this). So I picked 3 tones that would suit our urban lanscape better. I didn't realise the Indian has similar tones - I guess urban colors tend to look similar all over the world?

Those aren't kill marks, well at least not what I had in mind to begin with. Those are platoon level identifications, four stripes mean forth tank in the platoon. One stripe means the platoon leader, and so forth... I adopted this from the US Army / USMC marking practices during the OIF campaign (check out their M1s). The British on the other hand used stripes to represent squadrons in some cases. For example: 2 stripes mean B squadron.

I personally prefer the splinter scheme (inspired by the Swedish and Finnish Leo2A4s), but yes you're right that the "ambush" scheme (though I didn't intend to use that name) suits our jungles better (however, keep in mind that we don't have that many jungles left...). More like Concrete Jungle to be exact - soon, our Orchard Road will be very dark during the broad daylight due to the high-rise buildings that's currently being built... Anyway, back to the ambush, the "leafs" are to be created from stencils - hoping to make it easy for the painters. And the purpose of the "leafs" is to breakup the lines of the MBT even further.

The little flags, I adopted this practise from the Norwegian Leopard 2 tankers. The black battleboard with white alphanumerics - I retained our practise (saw this system used by our AMX-13 and Bionix / Bionix Mark IIs during the last AOH. So the "kill rings" reflect the second digit from the battleboards you're seeing here. The vehicle names - starts with "C" and corresponds with the "C"s on the battleboards.

But thanks very much for the kind comments! When I have time, I'll try to experiment a little further with the colors. One thing for sure, we won't have "winter schemes"... bummer... But at the rate this planet's weather is deteriorating.. who knows??!

However, imagine if our tanks paraded down the Padang during the next NDP adopting one of the schemes?! (hopeful, of course - I've heard they are sticking to Temasek green after all...*sniff*)

Cheers!

The Italeri kit does depict an older Leopard 2 but that may work for Singapore's. They'll be, ahem, pre-owned, and countries like Poland and Finland have already had first refusal on stocks of unwanted 2A4s. They may well have had the more recent ones.

Yet another option opens up for my Leopard stash ... and I'd buy any of those what-if schemes!

Yes, you are correct about Italeri's kit (not A4 standard). That means, you'll need to do some work to bring it up to standard, because Singapore's tank is of a later batch. There's a muzzle reference piece on the business end, and I believe the flag pole holder (found on the commander's side) is there too. Typical A4 features.

Hopefully our tanks don't stay all-green forever... Lets get the air-gun out and do some serious camouflaging, men!
