Hi David,
Welcome to Armorama from Dunedin!
Depending on your requirements (do you want the airbrush for basic coverage, or would you prefer one that does everything from spraying on coats of primer to being able to spray fine lines (1mm or less)?) The basic Badger airbrushes are generally pretty good if you're looking for a budget model. http://www.badgerairbrush.com/ is a site worth looking at.
Other brands, include Iwata http://www.iwata-medea.com/index.html
For some good information have a look at http://www.howtoairbrush.com/airbrushes-you-don't-want-to-buy.htm
Other places to look for information are in the Armorama Forum pages, especially 'Painting' and 'Tools and Supplies'.

Hope this is of some help.
Cheers!
Jeff W.

Cheers man.
Do you have a personal opinion on a good all round airbrush that could be used for 1:72 all the way to 1:35 scale.
i kinda need somthing that has pencel thin lines and can be modified to spray overall base coluors.
price wise a max of about $250.
Im putting it in the Nz corner because the prices and selection from overseas is so differnt from here.
Thanks.

Hi there,

I've recently bought My First Airbrush, but my main concern was having something to practise technique with first AND to get a decent compressor.

It just so happens that both Hobby City in Auckland and Ace Hobbies on the North Shore had/have a compressor in stock which comes with a FREE Airbrush, for NZ$299 +/-

Now, the brush ain't up to much, compared to some of the high flying gear you'll see out there, but it's a great starter - I intend to upgrade to an Iwata or an Aztec at some stage.

But I do have a good compressor.

$0.02

Finding an airbrush that goes down to pencil-thin lines for around $250? Hmmm, all i can suggest is to shop around. Places like Trade Me and Ebay are worth looking at.
If you're getting a decent airbrush you'll need a compressor, preferably one with a decent pressure guage, plus a watertrap, which is essential for avoiding nasty water vapour problems with your paint.
I know Mitre 10 are selling 12 volt mini compressors for $26.00 in their 'automotive and garage' dept.; How good they are couldn't say...

Hi David

The Tamiya airbrush is made by the same crowd who make Iwata

Here is a link with review of Tmia airbrushes

I am thinking of getting the one he recommends:

Hope this helps you.

I currently have the Tamiya Sprayworks and Compressor and I am looking to upgrade both.

Regards

Sean
