There are two great books on World War II out by Alex Kershaw. The first is "The Longest Winter", the history channel does this no justice, and the other is "Bedford Boys"

The first one is about the I&R Platoon of the 394th Infantry that held out at Lanzerath Belgium for an entire day and did not surrender until they ran out of ammo. As I said some people may recognize this story from a recent episode of Shootout on the History Channel that focused on the Bulge. IT gave the platoon no justice and made it look like the somethings happened the wrong way.

The other book is about A Company of the 116th Infantry who were the first wave on Omaha. The core of the unit came from Bedford VIrginia and of the 35ish men from the town atleast 20 or more of them were killed with in minutes of landing.

Both books are worth reading.
