Hey I am going to NYC around east-30th st and I am looking for a really good hobby shop. Does anyone know of any? I build mostly Armor but I also like Sci-fi. Hoping to spend money and time. Thanks.

As Mr. Greenly said- "Go West Young Man". You ain't going to find any in the city.
Across the river in Jersey, I could give you a pretty good list of good hobby shops. One closest to the city is Ridgefield Hobbies, in Ridgefield New Jersey.

30 years ago I would have recommended Polks on 5th Ave, ten years ago Ace on I think 34th St. New York rents have driven the hobby shop out of Manhattan.

There is one hobby shop worth a visit: the Red Caboose, 23 East 45th St.
http://www.theredcaboose.com/
It's an intriguing little underground den. It deals mostly in railway stuff, but there are also air, armor, car and ship kits. Worth a visit.

Did Ace go out of business, or they just leave Manhattan for a cheaper location? Either way, it's a real shame--it was my favorite shop back in the early 90s. The owner was a pretty friendly guy. If they are still in business I'd love to know where.

I dont know of any good hobby stores in NYC, but in new Jersey there is a very big hobby store called "Hi Way Hobby" off of route 17 in Ramsey. I used to go there when I was a kid and lived in NY. They always had everything. Cehck it out if you dont mind a little drive

Hi Guys,
To be truthful, there are only two really good hobby shops in the NYC area and neither is in NYC! Ace doesn't count because there is no shop. Business is done from the back seat of the owner's car! First is Baseline models in West Babylon (250 Little East Neck, West Babylon, NY 11704, (631) 376-0060). They are 8 blocks from the train station out on Long Island (it's about a 1 hour train ride). The Other is Avenel Hobbies in Avenel, NJ (1111 St Georges Avenue, Colonia, NJ 07067, (732) 382-7717) . Like most of NJ, there isn'y too much in the way of public transportation there (the train station is a couple of miles away), so you'll need to rent a car. Sorry to burst your bubble.
Regards,
Georg
