 Hi All,
I was wondering if there are any of you out there that build primarily out of the box (OOB)?
I have built Dragon kits with Photo Etch parts, etc. but I primarily build my vehicles the way they come.
I love this hobby but unfortunately, I don't have an enormous amount of time to spend on it.
I'm all about accuracy (camo, markings, etc) but somehow when I have to deal with PE, resin, etc. it kind of takes the fun out of the build and makes it seem more like work.
I have recently bought a few Eduard sets ( for the Italeri Hetzer and zimmerit for the DML Brumbaer Late) and will use them to jazz up a couple of old models.
I'm not lazy...I don't think!
Am I in the minority? What do you think?

I am basically an OOB builder. I also find that P.E. can assume the role of a chore and take the enjoyment out of assembling kitsets. I also use a rattle can and hand paint. Hmmmmmmmmmm a good clean build and careful paint job is the key to making a nice model and the manufacturerers design them to be complete OOB.
However each to his/her own, if aftermarket appeals to many modellers that's o.k. too!

I do the majority of my building out of the box. I may tweak a part here or there but I'll scratch them vs. buying a full PE set.
I do a few super detailed kits a year but the majority is OOTB. For me its about time and money. The building is mostly for me, so if I like it then I'm not going to go crazy with it. I'll tend to do more shake-and-bake kits from tamiya OOTB vs. other kits that need help.

I do a lot of my building OOB.
I find that I barley have the money to buy the kit itself and the paint and simply can’t afford all the aftermarket stuff. I do however modify some parts and do some scratch building.
Of course if I’m doing something special (such as the dio I’ll be doing for my grandfather) I’ll go all out to make it as accurate as possible. Also if I find something that looks like crap or need something specific for a project I’ll look to aftermarket sources.

Ahoy, mates!
I, like you guys, build OOB quite a bit, BUT, there are times that I just can't resist adding a bit of PE flash here and there to increase both accuracy and overall looks of whatever might be on my bench at the time. . .I think that there are alot of modelers out there like us. . .Hey Scott, this might be a good opinion Poll question!

Same here, almost always OOB. I too might add some stuff from the spares box or add some resin zimm but that is about it.

Yea, you can count me in the OOB category too. Just thinking about a $12.00 Tamiya M41 Bulldog puts a smile on my face. It was the first AFV I even built.

*raises hand.
Yep, I do OOB models especially if I don't know the vehicle well but has interest on building one. For example my Gloster Meteor F1. I knew nothing about the accuracy of the craft so I built it the way the instructions says it, and a couple of photos on the net for painting.

I recently built a Tamiya 1/48 V-1 (Fi-103), a Tamiya Sdkfz 222 and an Italeri Horsch 15 staff car OOB. I've been doing PE, various AM add-on and some minor scratchbuilding lately and I found the OOB experience a great one!! I got me centered and back to my 'roots' of modelling. I honestly felt like a kid again 'cause I could do something in a week that would normally take me months. But, alas...my Voyager PE set for my AFV Club Centurion is calling and I'm looking forward to getting back to it. I'll build OOB every once in awhile to keep me sane.

OOB builds for me too, unless its adding personal gear or extra weapons, or simple things like that which are themselves out of another box. I have the time to superdetail, but not the money.

I personally love building out of the box for several reasons.
1. It's cheaper! I'm a college student, and trust me, it ain't cheap!
2. It's easier! Less stuff you need to worry about breaking....like teeny-tiny photo-etch parts!
3. If I want to change something, all I need is some sheet styrene and some different grades of wire.
Thanks for your time!

I build mostly OOB. I do add stowage from accessory kits and at times I'll splurge on a set of Friul tracks. I'm not big on PE kits though as these old eyes and fingers just aren't up to the task most times.

Well I'm an OOB builder as well... Have made a few tentative steps into the world of PE.. So far I'm not a huge fan. The look is nice but man are they fiddly.. Have only used Friuls once. With the dragon kits these days, I dont really feel the need to go nuts with aftermarket widgets and who-hahs...

I find myself doing mostly OOB. With the extras that come with Dragon and some AFV Club kits, there isn't a huge need, unless you feel truly compelled, to get into the AM stuff.
I think what happens with me is that most subjects, especially the first time building them, I'll go OOB. But, if it's something I think is really cool and find myself building more than one of the subject, I'll eventually start going the PE route on at least one build of that particular subject.
Besides, there's a certain satisfaction is being able to actually complete something once in awhile.

:-) I,m mostly OOTB. I don,t mind spending extra for a nice turned barrel for my Soviet AFV,s. I don,t even get into resin! Not on my Soviet AFV,s or Soviet aircraft ! Resin is way too costly. I always use after-market decals or transfers. I feel the quality is always better. I think you'd call me an OOB builder, but then since I've mainly been doing Dragon kits lately, I don't think that's giving much away! I can't cope with the smaller PE parts, I can barely see them, let alone build them. In some cases I don't think they add anything anyway, in my view they are for the detail nuts who are interested in competitions, something that has never appealed to me. I like the metal gun barrels in the Dragon kits, far superior to any injection moulded part, but I can't see the point of splashing out for metal tracks when the seperate links Dragon provide are so good. Besides, I'm led to believe some AM tracks are slightly over-scale (yes I know the weight of metal links gives convincing sag, but you should be able to obtain this anyway, with care). Give me time, it's only recently I started giving my figures rifle sling from old champagne bottle foil!

I build OOB, don't really have the time to really go all out. Plus I don't have a chance to enter contests and the ones who do see them could'nt tell the difference

I totally build OOB and I only hand paint. I entered some contests this year for the first time and won some trophies. The truth is, I find building and hand painting very relaxing and rewarding not to mention I really don't want to spend too much.
Thanks for asking!

I echo Scott almost 100%--I will buy an occassional P/E or resin set, though. Otherwise, his words are my thoughts.
