Just back from accident and Emergency where a very attractive New Zealander doctor put 8 stitches in my left index finger.
Through sheer laziness at not walking across the room to get a razor saw I managed to slice through the finger and nail with a scalpel blade fitted to an X acto knife. I was cutting a resin pouring plug from a figure I was holding in my left hand.
She said it was a remarkably clean cut (New blade) but I may lose the nail.
I wish I'd taken my father's advice " never cut towards yourself" and "You can't buy fingers in woolworths"
It wasn't a total loss though She gave me the clamps and tweezers that she had been using to help stitch me up :-)
Now I have to go take some painkillers

Don't think of it as losing a nail through laziness, think of it as gaining some new medical quality tools through an elaborate scheme (or at least thats how you can tell the story :-)).

But seriously, glad to hear you are relatively ok and that you had such a nice doctor. Accidents happen to even the best.

Ouch, hope you heal well and retain the finger nail. That sux man. I learned the lesson of cutting away from myself as a kid. I learned how valuable my fingers were due to an accident at work where I crushed and cut my right middle and ring fingers. The nerve was so damaged I still barely have any feeling in those fingers. As well, I cut the tendons, and now have limited use of those fingers. It took three hours of surgery and six months of therapy to gain most of the use of those fingers back. I have never taken my fingers for granted again. But hey, at least they gave you some pain meds. Hydrocodones and percocets rule! LOL

Sorry to hear you got cut. Did you say to yourself, as i have on a number of occasions, just before it happens, "This is how people get hurt?"

I said that just before running my finger through a router, and at another time with a very sharp chisel.

Good to know you got to keep the clamps!

My wife was annoyed by the fact that I had noticed where the cute New Zealand Doc was from and that she was young. If I remembered her name I might have been on my way back to A&E

Not the best way to get tools, but I'm glad you're seeing the positive side of it.

Here's a picture of the tools the doc used to sow up my finger and gave me to take home. Hopefully they'll remind me to be more careful in future.

I've had a few bad ones myself. The worst was the time for some reason I put my knife on the back of the sofa (don't remember why I had it out there). Later I layed down and moved back to get more comfortable, not knowing the knife had fallen, and felt a sharp stick in my gluteus maximus. Jumping up I pulling it from my rump and the blood leaked all down my leg. It was a nice clean cut too but deep. I couldn't go to the local hospital (I worked there at the time and knew all the nurses in emergency) so I had a bandage on my rump for the next week or so......

While splitting a board for a base, I managed to hit my thumb on the top of a spining table saw blade. Kicked my hand back at me with a nasty gouge in the thumb. Like a true follower of Tim "Toolman" Taylor, I finished the project before calling my wife to bring me to the ER. She wasn't happy when she found out that I waited til the bleeding stopped to call her.

Now, I use a push stick.

A bloke I work with was mowing his lawn with a petrol mower .After a bit it bunged up.So he he sticks his finger in to clear the blockage.Result one mangled finger as he didn`t turn it off.So he turns up at work one day with a bandage like a Zeppelin on his finger and tells us what happened.Well you shouldn`t laugh should you? :-) :-) He then tells us that it Happened last time he did it as well. :-) :-) The thing is he is a member of the factory emergency response team.My life in his hands.

copped a stream of stupid glue in my teeth. Glued my teeth together. Tube blew out. Funniest thing was i had a date that night to a dental ball. Lucky my teeth came un-done.

Ouch!!! Sounds painful Pat.
Thankfully Ive never cut my fingers badly enough to require stitches, just the small fine slices you only notice when you see the blood .... I use scalpels instead of Xacto knives.
The worst was when a knife rolled of the table and entered the top of my bare foot. Thankfully the blade was clean.

Hope your finger is better now Pat, after two years!!
