Gday Sterlo
How about having a gander at some older buildings where you live? Look at how floor boards/joists/bearers relate to each other, and get some measurements then scale down to 1/35th...
Same with door jambs, windows, sills etc.
Do an image search on the www for doors etc. of period you need... Check out Mini art I know they have released a set of the above things as additions to ones' buildings...
The local hobby shop should have a well stocked display of fine veneer timber strips of all sizes which not only are easy to use, but look exactly like what you are trying to recreate...
Hope this helps some
Cheers

MiniArt do an excellent set in injection plastic which includes such items as windows etc. You can see a review of it here:

Hi,
I'm doing all my window work based on this feature here on Armorama

Basic Window Construction

https://armorama.kitmaker.net//features/439

It's very simple and gives you a lot of freedom for own construction

Cheers

Hightower,

I am working on a verlinden building myself (working in my case means not much lately). I used bass wood for the floors, doors and windows. I assembled each and then proceeded to damage each to the point I wanted. I included some pictures. If you have specific questions, feel free to ask.

Dave

Dave, cool looking structure. O.K. some questions please. Was the basswood flooring already in the right width and thickness or did you have to cut it from wider stock ? Also, the other wood for supports and cross beams was that stock size or did you cut it to width etc? And where would I get that ? Hobby shop, WallMart, art supply store ? And what about balsa type wood, have you used that ? Whats the diference between balsa and bass ? Again looks great. What type of paint did you use for the building ? and how did you apply it ? Airbrush, brush, small roller ?
Thanks for the info. I'm sure I'll think of other questions after I hit the post button, hope you don't mind.
Cheers, eh.

OK Sterling,

Here goes:

1. The Bass wood was already patterned (individual boards visiable), but came in standard 18" X 4" stock. It also comes in various thicknesses.

2. The beams (for floors and supports for 2nd floor and stairs) are actually fireplace match sticks. The long ones you use to light fireplaces and BBQ grills.

3. I got my Bass wood from the local hobby shop, but any where that sells model train supplies or scratch building supplies should have them. Also, you can sometimes find it at art supply stores. The match sticks came from the local grocery store.

4. The difference between Bass wood and Balsa wood is basically strength and texture. Balsa is much softer.

5. As far as paint for the building, I used Vallejo acrilics for walls and floors. The paint was sometimes mixed and sometimes just thinned. I experimented alot before I was happy. The one down fall was I did not keep a record, so not sure I can ever duplicate the effort.

6. All paint was applied with different size/types of brushes. Then washed several times with black, and brown enamel based washes.

7. After all paint had a chance to set, I used MIG pigments dusted on areas and then set with either a brush dipped in water or a light water spray, depending on the look I was trying to achieve.

The best advice I can give you is just look around hobby and craft stores and let your imagination run wild. You will be surprised at what you can adapt for use that was never intended to be used on a 1/35th building.

Hope this helps.

Dave

Thanks,Sterling and Rohby. Believe it or not, it's my first attempt at a building.

I've always just done armor. Got the diorama bug about a year ago, so I thought I would give it a try.

Sterling; you can find more pictures (some even of the work in progress) in "My Photos.".

As before, if you think of anymore questions, feel free to ask.
