Hey everyone,

I recently bought some plastic sheets and experimented a little. As I need a lot of ammo and supply crates in my current D-Day Diorama project, I thought it might be a much cheaper solution to build them myself. I am pretty happy with the results plus it was a lot of fun to build them, not to mention that i learned a lot of new techniques building these crates myself. Anyhow the crates were airbrushed with Tamiya olive drab paint. Then I applied a "washing" with heavily thinned brown oil paint. The final touches were added with highlights done with olive drab and natural wood (valejjo) using a dry brush technique. The wood grain was done with an old cutter blade.

Here some pictures.

This is the crate prior to painting.

Here a finished one.

Here I took the crate that came with the Italerie kit 105mm howitzer, I cut the cross bars on top of the lid and the rods on the sides to size, and scratched the wood grain in the main box and the add ons.

I am more than happy to answer any questions! Comments are always welcome!

Cheers

Woah!!! Steve!!! I love your movies!! LOL Nice work they look like crates and that means they are good. How did you go about making your wood grain? I use a battery powered motor tool to do my wood grain. Also what do you use for joining pieces? If yo have not tried it already you should get a bottle solvent. I swear by it and only use super glues, epoxies, etc when I have to. Welcome to the forum!

Gday Stevie B
They are very convincing and well constructed boxes/crates!
A good walk through on your technique also...
The finished product maybe still looks a little too gloss?
Thanks for showing your method

Hi. Crates look great! Very well done.

Yep I too prefer to scratch build even when I know I can buy...

Keep showing more of your scratch built projects.

Cheers, Michael

Thx guys,

I am really glad you all like the boxes, that means they truned out good.

@coldwarrior:
I used an old cutter blade to engrave the wood stucture. It works pretty well and is done very easily. To join pieces I used the regular plastic glue from Revell. I must say it works pretty good but I will definitely try the bottle solvent you recommended! Sounds like it is magic stuff.

@Honeycut:
You are right, the boxes still look very glossy that is because I haven't put any clear flat on it yet. Sill gotta do that!

Thx all for your comments! Now that I know scratch building is fun, I am going to do more projects and of course I will keep you posted on the progress!

Ya'll have a good day!

Cheers
Heli
