Beware, next time it will be the Aussies that I'll support.... :-) :-) :-) Need to keep things even.
Talking about the Ashes, WHAT is the story behind this Ashes thing, the wee trophy? Care to enlighten me?

Gday Jan
The ashes dates back aways to 1882
"In Affectionate Remembrance of ENGLISH CRICKET, which died at the Oval on 29th AUGUST, 1882, Deeply lamented by a large circle of sorrowing friends and acquaintances R.I.P.
N.B. — The body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia."

Sort of a metaphor for the English cricket at the time, having just lost to Australia (convicts ;-) )
Apparently the urn was presented with the charred remains of bails (the two small timber pieces which sit on the stumps, forming the 'wicket'...) by some wives of Aussie players early last century, in what was believed to be a perfume jar, which is what you are referring to... They are now too fragile to leave Lords museum IIRC...
Hope that helps, and C'mon Aussie c'mon!!

Bradley

You got there before me. Let's hope that the Ashes series this winter (for us) is as enjoyable as last summers one.

May the best team win!!!

Jan

Feel free to support the aussies this time. It won't change my support for Scotland in every game they play (Footy or Rugby), unless it's against us. Any country that can produce a drinks as fantastic as Laphroig and Talisker gets my support any time.
