I've found the excavation linked to Wilfred Owen which I mentioned in the thread, and it turns out to have been in France after all. Since the Somme offensive was still rumbling on 90 years ago, I think it's appropriate to have a reminder of the human cost.

BTW for UK TV viewers, Five is showing a series featuring the same group of excavators which started this week.

Hi David,

Thanks for the link to the article, I'll get a read later this evening. I remember the programme on the TV.

The cost in human life certainely blew away and illusions people had about Glory and Honour in Battle. War's a cruel, mean and bloody business fought by very brave men and often started and governed by fools.
