About five minutes ago i was standing out in my garden enjoying the evening air ,when my teeth began to rattle in my head, cause, a Lancaster bomber with two hurricanes as wing men flew over my garden and they were low enough to see the paint job, what a sight, what a noise.big beautiful bird.My Dad flew in them and i must admit I got a lump in my throat when I see it.

That sounds cool, to bad you didn't have a quick camera ready.

Still sounds good.

That must have been the Battle of Britain Memorial flight off to an air show or on the way back from one.

Great to see isn't it.

From memory the BOB memorial flight is a Spitfire, a Hurricane and the Lancaster - 6 merlin engines at once - lump to the throat, and hairs on the back of the neck standing up. A great sight anytime.

Friend of mine who is a spitfire nut told me they were off to Denston?in Kent for a airshow apparently they line up to the Q.E.2 bridge and go in from there, bit like the germans lining up tower bridge for their bomb runs.

Sometimes if the spit can't fly a hurricane takes it's place. Other than that you're right on all counts. Everything stops at the airshows when they fly in.
The only other things that stop everything is the Red Arrows and used to be Concord. (spelt the English way)

Working outdoors in southern Ontario, I have the opportunity to see our Canadian Lancaster flying out of Hamilton. The distinctive sound of the four merlin engines is one that is hard to miss. Can't imagine what a thousand bombers all at once would sound like.....

Must have been a beautiful site. I can only imagine the feeling of having that beautiful bird flying overhead. Several months ago, I felt the whole house shake and a noise that could only be surprised as monsterous. I rushed in to the backyard expecting a very large airplane to be flying low and slow. Instead, I was treated to a flyby by an US Army Chinook. Man, was I surprised.

One Canadian, one British...... that's all. Every time I see the Lanc. flying overheard, it's mixed feelings, I love the sight and the sounds, but I fear it's a matter of time before they fly the girl into the ground.

Thanks for sharing your experience. It's great to see classic aircraft overhead and I think it's even more special when you don't expect it.

I live close to both a military airlift wing and a refueling wing, so I'm treated daily to C-130's and KC-135's overhead. I've lived in this area for over 20 years and I still stop and watch them.

I was very fortunate this summer to literally have the USN Blue Angel's practice right over my front yard. My son and I spent several hours over a two day period watching them practice and I took hundreds of photos - some even better than the ones I got at the air show where they were performing. Best of all, Blue Angel #5 (Lead Solo) did a little wing wave to my son on the second day of practice. If he only knew the happiness that little gesture made on an 8-year old boy (and his dad, too!)

The red Arrows with the last flying Vulcan (now sadly grounded) was a fantastic sight - lucky enough to be on the flight path when they appeared at the last West Malling War Birds Display. Went the next day just to be closer - if i can find the photos i'll post them - but they may have disappeared in my Divorce.

Found this on t'interweb

The BBMF sometimes passes over Essex, but we're more likely to see only flying B17 in Britain, the Sally B. Sometimes accompanied by a P47 and once, when I was really lucky, flying with the French B17 Pink Lady. Not something you expect to see passing over Sainsbury's car park.

Pink Lady

Site comes complete with period music so if you're surfing while working........:-)

You're very lucky to have seen that - 2 B17's for the price of one - a happy day.

Saw Sally B and BBMF Lanc together at War Birds show many years ago

Ahh the Vulcan, Used to see it nearly every year at Faiford air show, Like you said, what a noise. GREAT!!!!!!
You're right, there is a good chance she'll fly next year, it was anounced at Faiford this year. Fingers crossed.

I used to see a Vulcan fly all around the Bristol area with an Olympus engine (Concords engine) slung in a pod underneath. It was before Concord ever flew and they were testing out the engines using the Vulcan as a flying test bed.
Wish I was old enough at the time to have had a good camera but I was only a kid.

All the best

A couple of years ago at the Watsonville Ca. Air Show, (sounds funky but is actually a pretty good show) the theme was WWII so they had a B-24 fly in with an escort of three P-51's. What a sight.
After the B-24 landed the 51's made low highspeed passes over the landing strip. Quite a sight and wonderful sounds.

Cheers,
Charles
