Greetings all,

I have this posted in Model Shipwrights but though perhaps this might be a better place to ask for some help.

I have the Trupmter LCM 3 scale 1/35 and wanted to extend the deck in front of the wheel house to accommodate 2 x 20mm cannon.

I know it needs extended because I bought the 20mm for my last LCM which was pretty much complete only to discover they needed more room !! LOL, LOL.

Anyway, any ideas how to approach this? I don't want to screw up the kit and have limited tools and scratchbuilding experience, so simple straightforward answers would be appreciated.

Where could I find a suitable piece of deck and supports? I could probably make the supports from wood but not sure how ro replicate the decking. Anyone got any drawing or plans, ideas that might help?

Cheers folks.

Al

Hi Al,
Hope the trip is going well. I was amazed yesterday my local shop is selling off the LCM3 for £9.99, I was tempted for a few moments.

I suppose you could always stick a bit of extra plastic on...

Hi John, Greetings all,

Flat plastic wouldn't do as it would look like flat steel and the decks have a ridged effect for grip on the top. Not sure if such a thing exsists but hoping to get a few more ideas to figure out what options there are.

Cheers

Al

Hi Bob,

Thanks for that information, it was the diamond tread I was refering too, so if you haave any more information on that it would be useful. Re the 20mm, Skipper gave me a reference last time I enquired about this, for a post war setting in South East Asia so I was thinking maybe something a bit different here if I can get all the bits to fit together!!!

I'll look back on my posts, there was a picture that came up at that time.

Cheers

Plastruct and Evergreen both make sheet plastic with various tread patterns embossed into them. There are also various tread plates available as PE sheets too.

Al, I had a contact who built an LCM after I supplied him with some data a while back. He produced some photographs of one vessel fitted with extra cannon for the Rhine Crossing. Here is the Link:-

https://armorama.kitmaker.net//features/101

Be aware that is an LCM6, not a 3.

Hope this helps. Regards, John

Hi John,

Thanks for that. There was a post running on Shipwrights about the LCM 3/6. The dimentions are fairly similar but if I remember correctly the LCM 6 has an extended deck at the back to hold the 20mm. I've PM skipper about the original post when this came up some 18 months ago and he had a photo showing the kind of craft I'm thinking about.

Cheers for that it may well prove to be very useful.

An LCM(6) is simply astretched LCM(3) with 6 feet added to the well deck to allow for longer/larger cargo loads, such as the Sherman tank. The upper deck was not lengthened. The below pics show LCM(3)s and an LCM(6) with added section before painting.
