Can anyone provide suggestions for tinting clear resin and still maintain some degree of transparency.

I found a source of transparent dyes for use with resin but they are rather expensive, and I was hoping there might be a more mundare and readily available solution.

A quick Google search came up with this site Nio idea of their customer service, but you've got a start.

Lo mate,

I seem to vaguely recall somebody using food dye to colour Kleer. It might work for clear resin too.

Already have a source for probably similar dyes, and with currency conversion and postage my local source would work out slightly cheaper, but still expensive for a few pigments that are only going to see occasional use.

I may try the food dye on a small sample if I can find some, and see what happens.

Cheers for the suggestions.

If you can't find food dye mate then you're really out in the "outback". Try yer Grannie's cupboard... They always had the stuff! :-) :-) :-)

Hi Pave Hawk

You may try to use chiness ink. I think mixed with water or thinner would work. just an idea...

Well, I found a possible solution. A product from a company called Pebeo. Used for staining glass and then being backed in a regular oven.

Didn't produce the exact effect I wanted but came pretty close though it did seem to produce some small particles of pigment that float in the resin preventing an even colouration. Fortunately I am after a murky appearance anyway so thats not such a ig problem for me.

The food dye was no use at all, just formed a ball of colour that moved around in the resin without even the slightest bit of blending.

I may purchase one of the resin pigments just to compare.

May also try the chinese ink thing but water based products dont reaaly want to play well with resin. No surprise there really.

Barnes make a acrylic tint for casting resin.
http://www.barnes.com.au/

I used it in my welcoem to the NAM entry and a little goes a long way.
If your only after a little bit I could send you some dark browna nd some yellow ochre. (I'll have to check whether it is flammable thouigh first - the Aus post doesn't like that

cheers
Andy.

Thats the stuff I was looking at. I'll probably stop being a cheap B*****d long enough to buy some and try out but it will have to wait a couple of weeks since I'll be away.

Hopefully between that and the other stuff I have I will get the murky infested sewer water look I am after.

Thanks for this post Pave-Hawk. I have some clear resin myself and will be needing to clear colour it shortly.

You saved me buying food dye too... (Granny long gone, have to buy things like this now )

Looks like tamiya clear colours work just fine tinting clear polyester resin.

Just tried a bit of tamiya clear orange which I mixed, let sit for a while then did a bit more mixing before adding the catalyst. Got a very even colouration, though I did end up with a small amount of pigment particles which may have been due to adding to much colour (only mixed up in a bottlecap). May have to experiment a bit more with ratios.
