Ok, just got back from the Dr. and I've got type 2 diabetes and have to watch what I eat and drink and I also have a blood monitor. Getting old sucks by the way.
Having just quit smoking last November and now this, what in the f %(*&^+_%#@!#$%$^&)( can I relax with [ coctail wise ] while modeling.
I quit drinking beer when I quit smoking, thinking there is no way I would be able to have a beer without having a butt.
Sooooo, I started with wines and quite enjoyed them. However I'm now being told that wine is very bad to have, as it will mess with my sugar.

My dilemma is, what in the holy grail can I use as modeling and relaxing imbibables without messing up my sugar.

Yuk - health problems are no fun at all.

I guess if you must, I'd go with a good scotch.
Is quantity an issue or 'any is bad'?

ONLY 2 DRINKS A DAY !!!!, you gotta be kidding me.
Well the upside is swimbo thought all drinking had to cease right here and now , at least I can show her the article.
Thanks John you may have saved my life, and my nasty habit of having an after dinner drink or 2 while modeling.
Scott, yes I've heard that also about Scotch, only problem is I'm not much of a Scotch drinker, well I guess I'll have to rethink that.
A little Irish Mist on the rocks outta do.
Thanks guys it's off to the after work imbibables acclaimation center, to peruse the Scotch.
Cheyenne

Now all I've gotta do is figure out how to photo shop that CBS article and change that 2 or 3 drinks a day to 5 or 6,............ anyone out there can teach me that Jedi mind trick ?

Cheyenne, I'm sorry to hear of your health problems. Health, like freedom is taken for granted by to many people...
As for the drinking, or any alternative medication, listen to your doc.. he is trained, and you know, the law of averages.. works out in favour of the doctor, not the quack..

Try vodka, it's pure alcohol, without any troublesome additives.. :-)

All the best

Not being a doctor, I'm unfit to recommend what someone just diagnosed with type 2 diabetes should or shouldn't do. I would suggest discussing it with your doctor, as to how much alcohol you can safely consume, as it probably has something to do with body weight, and how fast you can metabolize it. Remember that alcohol changes to sugar, and will throw off your new little meter into a *hitfit, and maybe you along with it.

Just be careful.

Cheyenne:

I am so sorry to learn about the news from your doctor. I'm starting my
70th year and have had to adjust to the after effects of prostate Cancer
and then just two yrs. ago I fell and completely severed the main tendon
that holds the knee cap in place. I live near the bathroom and don't
play tennis anymore.

BUT, . . . It isn't me that I really want to talk about here,
Cheyenne, however my point goes something like this:

Both those events caused major unwanted changes in my life
and there was no one to help me, to encourage me. It was very
difficult to adjust to those changes. It caused some sad times and some
soul searching. And what your doctor told you is going to cause some
major changes in your life. But you can do this. Don't think too far ahead
and just take it a day at a time.

As Dave O'Meara said do what the doctor said. LIke you, to help me relax
and do better work, I like to enjoy a Vodka and tonic as I'm modeling and so I
have an idea what you're feeling about maybe having to say nix to alcohol. But
Diabetes is nothing to take lightly. It can take your life. My brother-in-law died at
age 57 from complications with diabetes. He didn't alter his diet or learn how to
follow the doctors orders and for a few years it didn't seem to matter, but then it
was too late. My best friend, Dick Clay tried the same routine. When things started
to take a turn for the worst, he went blind and had to quit his job and eventually
had to have one lower leg amputated. He died at age 52. If these two people
had done what their doctors said, they would both be alive today. A person
can live with diabetes but not by living the same way as before.

I apologize for bringing up such serious matters, Cheyenne. And I know
perhaps my words might alarm you or make you uncomfortable. That is
not my intention. You're a fine modeler, but more importantly you're a good
person and have a kind and generous heart. Kevin Gardner will back me
up on that. So I just want to indicate that diabetes can be serious. So
make those changes and adjust to them. An outstanding modeler like
you has proven that you have a great deal of discipline.

I will pray for you, my friend and for your wife and family,

Rick Brownlee

Cheyenne,
Sorry to hear of your health dilemma.
I totally agree with you that they're are aspects of getting older that SUCK!
While being older and somewhat wiser can be fun and gratifing most of the time,
health issues can be trying.
Totally agree with Dave and Rick, a good discussion with your Doc would be a good starting point. I'd be leary of playing Russian Roulette with type 2 diabetes.
I had to give it up last year and get hearing aids for both ears...and I love music. Well that really sucks let me tell ya!
Back to you though, take care see the Doc.
How's the freighter coming along?
I always enjoy seeing your builds. Your engineering techniques facinate me.
Best regards,
Gary

Thanks guys, you too Mary, for your concern.
As Rick and Grumps has stated nothing really seems wrong , then it hits you hard if you don't monitor your food and beverage intakes.

Yes I'm following my Dr.'s orders and I'm very thankful to have nurse Diesel [ One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest ] as a wife, to further annoy me along and keep me on track. [ just kidding ]
The big thing is as Rick has stated about life changes, very big when taken for granted as far as what you can and can't eat or drink.
At first I didn't take it that seriously until further research on the subject.
Thanks again guys and you too Mary, I really love the people here and what we've got as a hobby and a cyber family.

Glenn, after reading Ricks and the others posts has made me think a little harder about my own diabetes. If you ever need to talk, you got my number and feel free! I'll sit and drink a diet coke sans alcohol with you and we can complain to each other about it Your health isnt something to take lightly. If you are going to drink do as the others have said and talk to your doctor about it. Even though some hard liquors dont have the carbs they will still make your blood sugars read funny. I have nurse deisel's sister here with me :-) she usually stays on me about this stuff, but I really need to start paying better attention too. How is sunday night for a call? Cheers Kevin

Tell nurse Ratchet to lighten up-

millions of people live with diabetes and you can too! Look on the bright side - if you have to go to insulin think of all the un barrels and pitot tubes - - just trying to keep it light man!

Hey Cheyenne,

My wife is an RN and specializes in Diabetes. The following is written by her........

Hi,

Here's a great resource from the Canadian Diabetes Association.

Here

I'm a certified diabetes educator - so I have quite a bit of insight into this. Big thing with alcohol is to limit it to 2 drinks a day ( no you can't save them all week and have them on one day!). Also if you are having more - make sure you have something to eat - because it can cause a low blood sugar up to 14 hours later. There are piles of other risks as well for general health. Watch the type of alcohol for carbs (big blood sugar issue). Also, if your doctor hasn't referred you, ask to be referred to a Diabetes Management Centre for some education - bring your wife along too!
