When you realize the cost of these battles, in the numbers of men killed and maimed - it boggles the mind.

By the end of the battle, the British Army had suffered 420,000 casualties including nearly 60,000 on the first day alone. The French lost 200,000 men and the Germans nearly 500,000.

Battle of Verdun.....21 February to 19 December 1916....
Casualties....

French: 378,000; of whom 120,000 dead
German: 337,000; of whom 100,000 dead
