Hi,
I have a lot of books on the Waffen-SS. Any opinions on who wrote the best book on them.
Some of the book topics I have in my library are about Commanders, units, uniforms and equipment, and modelling.
Just interested in what your favorites are.

Chris, I have many ref. books and one that stands out to me was by Heinz Hohne, first published in German in 1966.
If someone [ German sources ] can verify the validity of this book please correct or reaffirm my statements.
The name of the book is : THE ORDER OF THE DEATHS HEAD.
In German : DER ORDEN UNTER DEM TOTENKOPF.
This is a history of the SS, start to finish, the American version was published by Ballantine Books.
I was very impressed with the depth of coverage on this book and would recommend it highly to anyone.

Here are literally thousands of books concerning the SS. I havent read too many concerning the combat units of the SS - having studied The Holocaust a bit - but i have read Butler's 'The Black Angels'. I dont know the author's credientials, but i found it to be an engaging read on all of the combat SS forces.
Stepping aside for a sec, i also recommend Daniel Goldhagen's 'Hitler's Willing Executioners' too. It detracts from the purpose of this post, but its an interesting study into the psyche of the Eintzatzgruppen and similar units.

Hi guys me again. Also another excellent book about the Waffen SS was the history of the SS by Gordon Williamson, which told the story of the SS from its inception tnrough to its last days, an interesting read!

Waffen-SS Handbook, 1933-1945 by Gordon Williamson
Slaughterhouse: The Handbook of the Eastern Front by David Glantz
SS HITLER'S FOREIGN DIVISIONS : Foreign Volunteers in the Waffen SS 1940-1945 by Christopher Bishop
The Waffen-SS At War : Hitler's Praetorians 1925-1945 by Tim Ripley
Black Edelweiss: A Memoir of Combat and Conscience by a Soldier of the Waffen-SS by Johann Voss
EPIC: THE STORY OF THE WAFFEN-SS. Postwar book by SS General Leon DeGrelle
COMMAND AND OBEDIENCE: SS LEADERSHIP GUIDE by Alfred Kotz.
I have to admit that I have only read 3 of these Williamson , Ripley and Voss

Uniform wise, my opinion is the three volume set by Michael Beaver - Uniforms of the Waffen SS, covers pretty much all aspects of the uniforms worn, except for helmets and footwear. Expensive, but I doubt I'll ever have to by any other books on the subject.
