I was curious if anyone knew if the Werhmacht or SS had anything like chaplains in todays militaries? I have heard that they had more of "Ideological motovators" (for lack of a better term) than anything that we could compare to anything religious as we know it.

The Wehrmacht certainly had chaplains (both RC and Protestant).

I seem to recall seeing pictures of SS Chaplins, though I certainly couldn't swear to it. I know of a famous picture of the funeral of some of the sailors from the Graf Spee that included one or two priests of some kind giving the Nazi salute at the grave side.

The SS had some sort of pseudo-religious 'priests' in their ranks. I've seen pictures of them officiating at SS weddings. But whether they were termed chaplains I don't know. Given that Germany is mostly RC, I'd be surprised if there were no chaplains even in the SS.

Some info at the link below, including some quotes from German chaplains.

Found a book about them, too.

Well, that quote from Degrelle confirms the SS had chaplains.
