A few months ago, my broadband provider, Telefonica (Spain) introduced a 'filter' system, with the (excellent) intention of blocking access to sites containing 'Adult' material. The system works by refusing access to 'key' words. However, this morning, while posting a news story over on Model Shipwrights, I came across the most bizarre yet...

I was posting a news story on Trumpeter's latest (Ship) releases and amongst them was the Carrier, U.S.S. Essex. You've guessed it. It WOULDN'T let me access an image of this carrier due to it's 'adult content'....

Final proof. The world has gone completely insane....AAAAAAAGGGGHHHH!!! .. Jim

Filters also pick up on sites including the word Scunthorpe. And there is also a filter out there that denies access to anything bearing the the dreaded word 'swastika'.

Would also make searching the online heritage environment record for where I work in E**** a bit of a problem.....

I used to hang out all the time on The History Channel WWII forum. When trying to do a post about the HMS Hood I tried to use the following sentence. "It was well known that the Hood had a chink in her armor." It took me a while to figure out why it wouldn't let me post that. When I figured it out and changed chink to weakness, it worked fine.

I guess the reason why is because essex has the word Sex in it. The Filters in school do that, and we manage to get around it. ( FOR GAMES ONLY of course )

Those filtering softwares just employ a list of either URLs or keywords as black list. Most of the time they do not have any "intelligence" to determine if the site is to be allowed or blocked. Here in our office we use websense. You are not only one affected by the insane/stupid way of filtering...my SWMBO had the same experience...she was not allowed to access/view a site about baking cakes :-) ...why I don't know

We had them when I went to vocational school. They had some of the strangest things blocked including Ebay. Yet we could still look up adult material.
Really when I was in HVAC the entire class (including the teacher) spent one after noon seeing just what all we could still get into.
