Hi guys, after a long meditation I decided to start scratch building the German Army M-48A2GA2. Base kit it´s the Academy M 48A5. I alredy have most of the pieces needed (most of them coming from a Italeri Leopard 1A2 turret: main gun, rear turret stowage box, smoke grenades launchers, MG ring, hatches, search light, etc), but I still have to scratch build the mantlet cover, the commander copoula and the gun mantlet, among other things.

Well, questions now

1.- ¿Does anybody have done this before?
2.- ¿What other modifications will be needed to get the a pretty much accurate version?
3.- ¿Which material do I have to use for the copuola and the mantlet?

That´s all (for now) any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Once upon a time, a Korean company called Lo Models made an M48A2GA2 conversion set for the Tamiya M48A3. The set also converted the old Tamiya M60A1 to an M60A3 and turned the Tamiya M48A3 into an M48A5.

I can look to see if I have the German bits left over, but I believe I gave them away already. I know I still have the instructions. They may be of some assistance.

Klaus,

The biggest thing you need to consider for the M48A2GA2 conversion is that it is based on the M48A2 not the M48A5 or M48A3. The engine deck area is very different on the M48A2.

You will need to either scratchbuild the M48A2 style engine deck and revised hull stowage or find the old Monogram M48A2 kit and splice the engine deck on another kit.

I have looked at constructing an M48A2GA2 very seriously as part of a series of M48 variant builds and it is a project that can be done but with some effort.

I would also recommend the Tamiya M48A3 as a base kit instead of the Academy M48A5. The tracks and drive sprocket are too narrow on the M48A5 kit.

I have also had word from Legends Productions after the release of their recent M48A1 conversion that they will be releasing both M48A2 and M48A2GA2 conversions. Hopefully this will still happen.

You are off to a good start with using the Italeri Leopard parts.

I have the LO Models conversion set, is a half decent start but the commander's cupola and mantlet need extra work to make them accurate.

You should check eBay for both the LO Models conversion set and the Monogram M48A2 kit.

There was also a conversion set for the M48A2GA2 released by AEF Designs last year or so. I never saw it but heard it did not have an accurate cupola or mantlet.

Good luck with your project. I think the M48A2GA2 was one of the cooler looking M48s, especially in the NATO cam.
