Didi german trrops use sand bags they don't seem to be very evident in my limited references.

Yes they did ...I have seem few pictures of 88's in the desert with sandbags for protection ...I'm sure they were used alot on defensive lines but we don't see many in pictures, because most pictures were taken while the germans were advancing in thier Blitzkrieg fassion ,where no front line was defined,so no use for sandbags....
