Hi, Had to make a trip to the ear doctor today to check something out, and while there they had me take a hearing test. Now having had the pleasure of working for GM for 31 1/2 years I know before hand that this was something that I would most definitely fail, with flying colors. Now they want to fit me out for hearing aids. Ha, ha!

They had some real nice ones for around $3,500. A piece!!! No, I don't think so. I figure of all 5 senses we have losing the hearing would be the least important of them. Besides if I can't hear that means that I'm automatically cut out of most all the general B.S. going on, which, I figure, makes up at least 85% to 90% of general conversation in the modern world anyway. So, I'll look upon this as something of a blessing.

Ah, such are the wonders of getting older. I'll call it controlled Body Rot!!!!!! Can't wait to see what's going to screw up next.

Take care, Larry

My wife and kids are always saying I can't hear, but they are usually saying it after mumbling something from halfway across the house, then wondering why I couldn't hear them.

For myself I think loss of hearing is one of the better things about getting older. If SWMBO gives me a hard time about working on a model, or tells me to clean my modeling desk, I can always claim I didn't hear her. :-)

$3500 for ONE hearing aid? Does it come with power windows and leather seats? Dang, I had no idea those puppiers were so expensive.

At least you dont have to hear to use the keyboard and look at the screen!!!
There has got to be a bright side to it somewhere.

Larry

I'm sorry to hear about your hearing loss. Losing any one of the senses cannot be easy. You are right that most of what is said is not really worth hearing. On the other hand there is that small bit That can be well worth it.
I have a close friend who has lost his hearing to illness. I have seen first hand the problems he faces everyday.
If your hearing can be restored or helpped I urge you to try it. Besides, hearing aids do have shut off buttons for the stupid stuff.

I just re-read my above post and man does it sound completely heartless. Believe me I had absolutely no intention whatsoever of being that way. I have a teenage son who has no hearing at all in one ear. Docs say there is no fix for him due to nerve damage. I know he sometimes has a hard time with coordination and balance but he does a great job of compensating for the lack of hearing. I hope the best for you and hope that the hot rod hearing aids work out if you go that way.

Hi, No problem Mark, as my hearing loss has been a gradual process down over the years. The combination of aging, plus all those years in an auto factory where the sound levels are somewhat high, esp, when working with those big punch presses all those years. Not to mention fooling with hot rod cars when I was younger and going to the drag races every week end back in the '60s and '70s. And there was a spell of not using any hearing protection at the shooting ranges either.

Someone once told me that for whatever abuse we put our bodies through when we are younger we pay for at a later date, which is absolutely true. And this is just one of them. Of all the things that have happened to other folks I've known, esp. some of those of whom I used to work with, this is a very mior ailment. Really.

As I said, it's just one of those "fun" things about the aging process, and being close to 60 means that I'm just starting down the road to all kinds of other "neat" little trials and tribulations as far as the body goes. Don't let anybody fool you, the "Golden Years" is a big bunch of crap! Ha, ha!

Take care, Larry

Be vewy, vewy careful of what you ask for.........

I was supposed to have hearing aids around age 20 or so.Birth defect and high fever from measels whacked a lot of it.3500?That's pretty much top end satellite radio-ready category.I think Jack Baur has those :-) :-) .I think El Cheapos are around 1100 or so and 'good' ones start at about 1500 each.Only about 1% of health care plans cover these dudes too.Go figure.Good luck on this one, Larry
