What is the best size of styrene to use for scratch building armour? .005?

No straight answer here : thickness depends on what you want to make, and in what scale. To give you an idea, check with out-of-the-box plastic model kits. They are mostly a good reference.

Try .020 for major hull and turret parts. The thinner sheets for getting the scale effects.

old issues of finescale modeler have articles on scrathbuilding armour, most of what is used between .010 and .040, with the thick stuff used for the lower hull and weight baring stuctures. email me and i'll scan you a article on scratch building a S-Tank. alot of good info for anyone wanting to scratch build a tank stug
