Hi guys,

Robert Merz (aka ModelCitizen) needs our help...

His questions pertain to Isandlwana.... and unfortunately the only time I've travelled through KwaZulu-Natal I was flooring it from Durbs to Ladysmith and on a tight schedule... so please help...

I am hoping you can help me with some questions about the South African climate.

I understand that the battle at Isandlwana occurred during, or just after, the rainy season, so the rivers were swollen and fast moving, and quite impassible.

I am wondering then, what is the natural terrain like at this time of year? Is the ground a deeper color caused by the rains (rich browns and reds), or is it arid from the hot sun (a more dull, dry earthy look consisting of dusty browns and tans)?

Would the grass be about waist high, green at the bottoms, and yellowing to brown at the tips, or would it be almost dry from the sun, so yellow/tan and brown?

Finally, would the stones be bleached stone white as those used to make the cairns for the dead, or does that occur only after years of sun exposure?

Strange questions, I know, but as you live there, I thought I would ask. All of my books on the Zulu War have B&W photos, and so are of little use for this type of reference.

Thanks guys.

Hello Rudi,

As far as I can remember the grass is green during January and the earth a rather deep reddish colour.

The rocks in the area is mainly granite in varying shades of grey. The area also has dolomite and dolerite formations.

Tappie

Just a thought

I was born close to Isandlwana and have grown up in the area. I should have some photographs soon.

Tappie

Hi Tappie

I'd really appreciate it if you could forward those pics to me as well [email protected]

I might be doing some Zulu later through the year...
