I should say that I’m being a little Politically Correct on these “this day in history” posts. Some of the items I’m coming across could lead to discussions on current events, or politics, and I’m leaving those out. I’m hyper sensitive about my duties as moderator, and I don’t want to be the one to break the rules as to current events or such. I may change my feelings over time.

This day in history, February 9, 2006.

The Davis Cup for tennis is established in 1990.

In 1942 the French liner Normandie burns in New York harbor. The ship was being remodeled as a troop transport, the USS Lafayette, when life jackets on board caught fire.

Also in 1942 the United States began Day Light Savings Time, called then War Time, a practice that continues to this day in most US states.

Born on this day.

US President William Henry Harrison.

Poet Amy Lowell.

Actor Ronald Coleman. I really like this actor. He starred in two great movies, Prisoner of Zenda and A Tale of Two Cities.

Actress Carmen Miranda

“Dancer” Gypsy Rose Lee. For you non yanks out there she was a stripper who became famous.
