My father in law is one of those (my father having been just a bit too young.) He was in action from Operationm Torch through the end of the war, from Noth Africa, to Sicily and Italy, to the Bulge and into Germany withthe 36th Texas/ He received two wounds , one of which kept him out of the D-Day landings.
He's in the middle of this famous and oft reproduced picture:
