Hi again Rudi,
You are talking about the 1922 Miner's strike on teh Rand.
Not sure about the Whippet colour scheme, so I can't really help on that.
Uniforms of the Union Defence Force between the First and Second World Wars didn't change much in that time. Basic dress was the same as for the South West and East Africa campaigns of 1915 - 1918. Light sand coloured shirt and trousers, brown leather ankle boots with those pesky short puttees we wore as cadets as well, British style webbing, .303 rifles, and the tropical pith helmet, which the post office delivery guys have been wearing since after WW II.
The riots were initially handled by the SAP and on request to Smuts, the Transvaal Scottish were used to assist in the supression of the riots on the Rand. The main riots were on the East Rand.
Reference material on this period is however far and few between. The SA Musuem of Military History in Saxonwold, Johannesburg have some good reference. Depending on how urgently you need the info, I would suggest you contact the guys from the Gold reef Modeller's Club. They may be able to assist.
Regards,
Tappie
