I just thought I'd share with you the events in my life over the past 60hrs or so......

2200 Wed... Ruptured my achilles tendon on my left leg playing volleyball at the YMCA.

2300 Wed... Checked myself in to the Emergency ward at St. Josephs, here in Guelph, On.

0245 Thurs.... Was admitted in and put on a gurney.

0315 Thurs... Technologist took 4 x-rays of ankle/calf area.

0330 Thrus... Doctor confirms worst fears, but schedules me in for an ultrasound, "to get better picture of damage"

1400 Thurs... Ultrasound taken, 2nd Doctor confirms initial diagnosis.

1700 Thurs... Orthopiedic surgeon pays a visit (wearing full scrubs, eye shield and hair net, and if it wasn't for the guy next to me screaming Bloody Murder with his dislocated hip, would of been operated on there and then.

1400 Fri... Operated on.

1530 Fri... wake up to tolerable pain, with nurse giving me morphine. Informed that I'll have a nurse come over to the house to redress the wound, on a daily basis.

0005 - 0415 Sat.... Wide awake from pain, I'm on Oxycocet (2 pills every 4 to 6 hrs).

With all the negative reporting heard here in Canada about our health system, I thought it would be nice to share my positive experience with other folks, these health care people are busting their butts off for you and I, and in my case, I'm very thankful...

In serious pain, but still smiling...

Hey Frank

How long before you get back on both feet?
I'm glad to see the system is working. At least you should be off your feet for a while so you can get some modelling done once you can see strait from the pain killers. :-) :-)

Hey Clanky. Sorry about your luck man. Heal up fast. I think the health system just gets clogged up like the justice system. If someone has the flu, dont go to the hospital, thats what clinics and doctors are for.

Good luck with recovery

Hey Frank,
Glad to hear you are home and semi alert.. Sounds as though you may not be getting a decent nights sleep for a bit.. Hopefully the meds will allow you time to build..If not, relax and get well... Nice to know the health care system is working well...

Thanks for the comments,

IMHO, if there was a$20 service fee for every time you visited the ER,... two thirds of all questionable visits would disappear immediately, think of the savings to the system.

A big problem is also that alot of people have to use the ER cause of the doctor shortage. I know my family doctor is going to retire in the next couple years so its something I am worried about.

Of course people abuse going to the family doctor too.

Hope you get back on your feet soon Frank!

Out of pocket cost to me??? nothing,.... if I had stayed in the hospital overnight I would of ended up sharing a room, because of my limited coverage from work. Even the nurse calls at home are free of charge.

Frank

(P.S. the nurse made me scream BLOODY MURDER!!! today, when she took off the bandages and caught part of one staple with the gauze... I'm a wimp!)

This is the price you pay for trying to stay in shape!!!

I hope this isn't too graphic!!! this is what a full separation tear of the achilles tendon looks like...

Hi Frank

I was real sorry to hear about the leg. I hope its coming right along. Those staples will leave a pretty cool scar. I was also very happy to hear that the Hospital vist went so well. Good luck, and I hope you are up and about soon.

Harry
P.S. That home nurse thing, I think I saw a movie start that way when I was in college :-)
take care

I knew the answer to the question..it's one of the things I miss about Canada.....not having to search for an MD who is on your plan, co-pays, pre-certification for referrals etc. Even with health insurance and working for a hospital, a hospital stay here would cost more than a few bucks.

on the other hand, I can get Labatt and Molson here for $4.00/ 6-pack.

Nice to know your the luckiest between the two of us. Last year i smashed my face up in a snowboarding accident with a budy of mine near my house. Terribly sprained wrist that hurt like hell no matter what i did and they believed i had a broken nose. Walked to the clinic( 30min walk) because my father had the car and my mother doesn't know how to drive the truck and i didn't have my lisence yet. Get to hte clinic and it close, turn to grab a public phone and its shut down! how lucky does a man get? Anyhow, my brother and sister told my father were we were so he showed up brought us home then we took the car headed for the em. Once there it took 1:30 hours before the nurse checked me. Rated my pain at 8 and 9 hours later i hadnt even seen a doctor and no one in hte room had been called so we jsut left. Next day i had my mid years for science but went to the clinic instead, they sent me to another clinic for x rays, they check and i had a fractured nose and sprained wrist. a few months later i went to see a specialised doctor who said everything was fine and my nose wasnt broken nor fractured after all
And if your wondering what happened exactly, well i lost all grip on hte snow with the snowboard, hit hte jump side ways, flew about 5 feet in the air and smashed my face into an easy 1/2 inch of ice strong enought to hold my 170lbs!
pic of me after taking a very good wash at my face, i still have a decent sized scare between my two eyes
btw, id rahter have that face again than all those stitches
Speedy recovery!

I've been a police officer for almost 22 yrs now and have unfortunately have had my share of injuries on the job which required many hospital visits. I have never had a bad experience with our Canadian medical system. In many cases if it wasn't for the excellent doctors, specialists and nurses I would be a hell of a lot worse off

Darryl

I also tore my achilles tendon 3/4 through while in the army. They gave me 3 weeks no PT and then back running in combat boots.........No life like it!!! lol

OUCH!!!, three weeks?!? I hope attitudes in the service have changed since then!

Francois, Sorry to hear about your painful incident. I knew pretty well the extent of my injury, from the second it happened, and that is why, I headed straight for the emergency ward!

In those days I was a sapper with 1 CER stationed in Chilliwack and I tore it while on "bridge camp" which sort of sounds like a holiday camp lol.
