Ahoy!

Can anybody tell me, what types of resin can be used for hand casting, beside urethane and epoxy? For example, what acrylates? I used methyl-metacrylate, intended for industrial floors, with good results, and I should like to know what other materials would work.

Thanks!

Check out Smooth on. They carry just about all the mediums for casting. http://smooth-on.com/

I don't want to buy resins. A pal of mine works at a chemicals warehouse, and he could bring me just any kind of resin that is sold freely. Not stolen, only backstocks that would be thrown away otherwise. He could for example bring pure cyanic resins, but I guess it is not a safe choice for hand casting at home...

Hi Gŕbor!

Sorry to bother you but what exactely do you mean by "handcasting" ?
Casting the hands of a figure? Making a copy of your own hand? Making your own castings at home? I don't quite understand what you mean. Maybe you could be more precise... remember I'm French!
So you have a friend who can have free resin for you! Gŕbor you are also my friend! :-)

I mean drop casting... maybe that is better.
We can work out something as far as the resin is concerned, if you really want some, but at the moment I don't know what is OK to use.

Hi all!

Gŕbor, for resin castings I use polyurethane stuff. It's the same beige colored resin used for resin kits. It comes in two parts wich must be mixed together 50/50. The resin I use hardens in less than 30 minutes. The resin isn't dangerous as long as you work carefully (with gloves and in a well ventilated room).
I used resin for my Amphibs diorama and I'm currently working on a resin kit of the Bugatti 100P race plane. You can also see pictures of resin figure castings in my gallery ...
Hope this helps

Jean-Luc
