I saw this message on rec.models.scale today:

Just a heads up, and pssibly a future issue. One of the other usegroups I
am subsribed to has begun to have some issues with a bot that hoovers up any
mention of eB*y (yes I am a little paranoid and don't want to start it
here).

Basicly, you type that word in your post and within a few minutes get an
e-mail stating that your payment or some other nonsense had not been
recieved, yada yada yada. As often as we tend to use the word here, I
thought I should mention it, and maybe reccommend being careful before it
hits here. I hope it is over precaution, but some strange things are
seeming to infect us here too.

This was my response:

I just got this very message from username harrymurphy last night:

"Hey, I have tired twice to pay you through p*yp*l but the transaction
is not working its keeps giving an error message (This recipient is
currently unable to receive money) is there anything wrong with your
p*yp*l??"

{note: I replaced the "a" with *}

Two things weren't right. First, I haven't sold in years. Second, the
message came to my non-eb*y e-mail address. Other than those two facts,
the message looked just like one you would get through the eB*y message system.

I forwarded the message to spoof@eB*y.com so they could handle it.

Just wanted to give you guys a heads up who sell on eBay.

Seems every day a new one comes up about ebay or paypal......
Today was a first for me... my bank.....
well, my bank never sents out emails..... never ever.... no matter what..... so I guess any that say they are from my bank aren't .....seems pretty simple......

if you don't think they are from paypal or ebay... forward them unopened to spoof@ either ebay or paypal.

Ah yes... the banks. I'm getting these emails from banks that I don't do business with telling me my account may be compromised. On top of that, some of these banks don't even operate in Canada!

With today's programs, your email box will get tons of these "phishing" schemes which direct you to supposedly real looking sites. I've gotten tons of eBay and paypal fake emails. The emails from Wells Fargo (not located in my part of the country) and other banks is funny.

With the spamming programs, it doesn't matter if you're sending out 1000 fake emails or ten billion. It's all the same.

FYI: when Ebay actually does email me, they always address me by my full name. I guess this may be compromised someday but that's a good indicator of whether or not it's real.

Check your credit card statements every time too. I got a $24.99 charge from Digital Age in Cyprus, Sweden. Totally fake. I guess they did this to 1000s of accounts.
