It's about the fact that many of us Americans are woefully uninformed about our brethren to the north, as well as much of anything beyond our immediate neighborhood, unless it's cover news on the cover of
US or
PEOPLE.
When I was being taught history below the college level, there was never any connection between the French and Indian War in North America and the Seven Years War in Europe or the War of 1812 and the Napoleonic wars "over there."
I suspect many of the folks posting here have a better understanding of history than the general public, however, than the average American. A case in point, my oldest friend is a reporter in Maine and a student of the American Civil War . He covered a story about the state colors from Gettysburg having been identified a couple years back. His editor, a native of the state, asked him on which side did Maine fight in the ACW.
Remember, Joshua Chamberlain, the Hero of Little Round Top, was governor of Maine for at least three terms and was the president of Bowdoin College in Brunswick for many years, as well as the focus of the movie
Gettysburg, this incident having occurred prior to the release of
 Gods and Generals.
