Howdy All,

Thought I'd both share this rather interesting photograph with you all, and at the same time point out that today's modern 'smart' bombs are obviously offspring from some rather interesting forefathers......

Here's a pic of the SD1400X, or otherwise known as the "Fritz X".

This "smart" bomb not only preceded our own modern day technologically advanced weapon delivery systems, but, also pre-dated both the V-1 and the V-2 rockets that terrorized London during the Blitz......this wee beauty was radio controlled, and launched {just like today} from an aircraft, and usually targeted at enemy surface vessels. This particular WWII-era guided missle was responsible for both sinking and heavily damaging several major warships....not the least of which was the British Warspite!

And, just so you don't go thinking that this was just a "one-off", or a lucky experiment by the German's.....here's another example of German know-how.......

The Henschel Hs 293.....

Originally this very familiar looking bird was also radio controlled, and then the German's switched to wire-guided....again, familiar, huh?

.....just thought someone else might find this interesting

Tread.

Hi Threadhead and AJlafleche!

I have both Condor 1/48 Missile sets in my stash. If you want to have an in-box review of these just let me know...
I have the 1/48 Revell Dornier Do217 with Hs 293 bomb as well... The sloop HMS Egret, on 27 August 1943, had the dubious honour of being the first ship sunk by a guided missile... a Hs 293

It's interesting that you should mention these as I have just done a 10-page report over German Secret Weapons and their effect on the Cold War.

Try out this:

This is where I got most of my information Thanks for your time.

Okay Rainman, I just finished watching a "smart bomb" show on the history channel and they said that the "smart bomb" goes all the way back to during and after WW I when the army ask Mr. Kettering to provide them with a bomb that would take the pilot out of danger thus the "Kettering bug" was born. Unfortunately it was extremely unreliable. But the JASM bombs of today are much closer to taking the pilot out of danger by allowing him to be far from the target. I just thought I'd add some interesting thoughts to your already interesting discussion.

Merry Christmas Spot
