Folks,

I assume that militaries through out the world only supply leather seats to their calvary units. Everybody else gets fabric seats in their fighting vehicles. The seats I see in kits have smooth surfaces, more like leather than fabric. How do you sumulate fabric seats in your models?

I like to use white medical tape, just tape it down and paint it. You can even add some wrinkles to get a better effect.

Yeah Murph this stuff is great, it's thin enough and it wraps just around most anything. It can be trimmed once it's on and what I like the most is, it has a good texture as cloth....as it is cloth.

Its' been a loong time since I've done it but I used tissue aka Kleenex. Take a piece more than large enough to cover the item. Lay the tiisue in place, and cover it with liquid glue. To do the sides, GENTLY fold it down to cover the sides and repeat the application of liquid glue. Once it sets up use a sharp (new) X-Acto blade to trim it.

Like I said its' been a while but this always worked well for me. The texture looks good when painted and it drybrushed real well.

Joe, ever found that the adhesive gives up over time and the tape lifts?

Dave,
never had a problem with the tape edges lifting. I've been using medical tape for years. Maybe the painting has something to do with keeping the edges from lifting?

I just check a helicopter that has been boxed the last four years...still holding it's shape.

Mother,

I'm not sure exactly what you meant by "medical tape". I found some adhesive fabric tape used for sports injuries. If I ever figure out this photo posting thing, I'll add a shot of what I did.

The rivet police may tell me it looks like they used fishing net to cover the seats, but it really says fabric, not leather. All told it was easier than the Kleenex in white glue I'd been trying to use.

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!

Jaster,

When you say "liquid glue" do you mean like Testors Plastic Cement, or a PVA like Elmer's white glue??

Mother,

That wasn't too difficult.

Here is a shot of what I did. The tape I found is in the back. The large part to the front is a scrap with the tape in place and painted, next to it is the Kleenex covered seat. There is also another Kleened covered part and the unmodified kit part on top of the tape.

Is this what you were trying to describe?

Mark the tape your showing seems to be a bit course. The fabric seems a bit open with the large squares. The tape I’m talking about is used to tape a gauze pad over a wound. It’s thin, white and made of fabric. The one with the Kleenex looks good. I used that method myself, then I found that the medical tape work better and was easier to apply. Here a pic of what the tape looks like.

Joe, Dave,....

I use medical tape for seatbelts in my cars, for extra adhesion, run a bead of ultra fine C. A. glue prior to painting, trust me, it will never come off!

Mark-

Yup- Testors Liquid Plastic Cement or anything like it, but be careful, it'll mess up any other surface it comes into contact with. With careful use it works great for me.

Joe- I really like the wtinkle effect! I'll give it a go next time around.

Joe,

This one is with Johnson and Johnson All Purpose Cloth Tape. Large square is Atheletic tape, Medium Square is Kleenex and the small square is the cloth tape.

Looks way better. Not that you can tell from my lousy photo work.

Now about the color...

I used MM 2050, Olive Drab (ANA 613) cause I thought an ANA spec would be right for a Marine WWII unit. But this looks too green, seems to need some yellow to give it that well sat on look.

Thanks!!!
