I just got myself a new laptop for the tour. I think about half of 1VP is buying one cause the Canex is completly sold out! I was told they were thinking of putting wireless internet at the base in Kandahar. Does anyone know if this is true. Are we able to use personal computers to get on the internet there, wireless or hardwired? By the way, BTE 05 was really looong! Was anyone else there?

I'm heading over in Feb too. PM me and we'll discuss your questions.

Don't count on it. There may have been a plan by the US to do so, but they are drawing down as we build up. I doubt NATO will be interested in such a thing when they take over ownership. We do have internet access in the welfare area, and this will be expanded.

One of the Jimmy's I work with told me that the guys in Bosnia would hook up to the internet for their 15 mins and sent their emails that way and chat with their wives. Maybe that would work...if not I got a really expensive DVD player :-)

Mike, I know that as of Apr 05, our internet in the welfare in Bosnia was the same as everywhere else. It was controlled by the sigs guys.

From what I know about Kandahar, there will be the same sort of welfare set up as usual. I'm told we can't use wireless because of security reasons.

Paul can probably confirm this.

I wouldn't expect a great deal of infrastructure as this will be a Roto /Roto 1 like tour for us. The PRT camp may be a bit better established than the main camp, but I still wouldn't expect much as of yet.

See you at TMSBP on monday. :-)

We are in the process of setting up accommodation for Roto 1 now. We already have some internet and welfare phones in operation. The remainder that is in Camp Julien will be brought down here and will be set up prior to the arrival of roto1. However, it will be spread out in two or three locations.
