Is the term "track" always interchangeable with tank? My wife mentioned the other day that her brother was a "track commander" about 30 years ago when he was in the army. Reading some novels when track is used in context it's normally describing a ACV. Would a track be a ACV or a tank, or either one?

Yes, it is interchangeable. Anything with tracks has a TC or Track Commander, usually the most senior guy who is in charge of that vehicle. It could have been a tank or APC (Armored Personnel Carrier like a M113 or Bradley). Not sure what you mean by ACV, I'm assuming you mean APC. It is also used to describe the guy sitting in the front passenger seat of a wheeled vehicle as well. He is usually the most senior guy in the vehicle and in charge, hence the TC. Just the way we do things in the military.

Oops, I meant APC,not ACV. That's pretty much what I thought, that it could be either a tank of a APC, but I wasn't sure.

Ususally a track commander is an APC we refer to tanks as tanks therefore you would be a TANK commander ACV = Armored Cavalry Vehicle served in Armored Cavalry Regiment like the 2nd, 3rd and 11th. These are modified APC's I think they initially were M2 Bradleys while the regular infantry was in M3 Bradleys. The M113 Acav in 'Nam had all the extra machine guns.

Oh yes we tankers are definitely fussy about that difference
