With balsa or styrene strips for instance, sculpt them out of milliput.

With the strips you can make a box or crate just as you would do with real wood.

The easiest way to do that is with a lathe. but then you need one and need to know how to operate it.
And... most barrels are conical shaped and belief me, this is not a beginners shape to turn...

Or do you mean petrol drums??? (which can also be made on a lathe...)

I make wooden boxes out of sheet styrene and scribe the planks into it. Simple round drums can be made by using plastic tube and glueing circles of plastic into the ends.

You can also use Milliput or similar to make bags, boxes and barrels as well.

I guessed it must have been that... :-)

But... don't go around making those yourself... Italeri, Tamiya, Academy,... all make sets with drums in them. Especially the Italeri ones are quite cheap and good enough quality.

I wouldn't know of a better place to raise this question.

Solution 1. Buy them. Plenty of brands feature 1/35 steel drums. Disadvantage : they cost money. Advantage ; they'll look very good. You'll need quite a bit of experience to make drums that look nicer than the ones you get out of the Tamiya or Italeri box, but then you'll never learn to scratchbuild, and that would be a pity. Drums are an interesting subjet to start your scratchbuilding skills.

Solution 2. Check out pictures on the internet of real drums and 1/35 model drums (you'll find hundreds on this site alone if you look at the dioramas). If you don't know what they look like, you can't build them. Then think of all the materials you might need : 1cm thick plastic tube or rod, plasticard strips, very thin glue, a very sharp modeling knife, hours of cursing and messing about. Maybe slicing a piece off your finger and have glue all over your modeling table. You'lll love it !

Then go to the hobby shop and revert to solution 1.

If you're not properly equiped, you'll be cheaper off buying it in a store. If you really really want to build them yourself, please leave a message here that you really really want to build them yourself and we'll cook you a step-by-step guideline.

Have fun !
