There's an NAS right nearby. When I was there for the Nats in 2002, they provided a wake up airshow just about every day. The beach front is much like the jersey shore, hotels butting up to the beach with a boardwalk.

With all the great looking women on the beach.... who needs anything more...... BUT if you do get bored, NOB was an open base, and most in-port ships were open for tours.... Of course this was last time I was down there----- pre 9-11. BUT I imagine things have changed. NAS Oceana, and Little Creek also gave tours, again all pre 9-11, and again I imagine that has changed.
Go over to the Newport News Maritime Museum, you see ship models that will knock your socks off.... look for the one with the solid silver and gold fittings...... :-) :-) (there really is one, at least the last time I was there--- pre-9-11.... )

If you feel like a good time, hit the Raven.... Old Navy Hangout..... was a bucket of blood when I was stationed down there. Probably turned into a real sissy tourist place now..... :-) :-) :-) :-)

In a nutshell, think Navy and you get an idea of what to see in the Virginia Beach/Norfolk area.

Norfolk and Newport News is nearby, and at least Norfolk still give tours in post-9/11, but you stay in the bus. I also took a boat tour (though this might have been the same tour) that took us along the Naval base, but from the sea side. I will never forget seeing this large moving black "lump" only to realize a minute or two later that I was staring at an SSN leaving port! The aircraft are always flying from NAS Oceana and, when I was there, were flying approach over my hotel . Also in the distant horizon, one could see Navy ships pulling out and heading to sea.

Man, you will not lack for places.
Ft Eustis (Trans Museum), Ft Monroe (fortress), Maritime Museum, VA Air & Space Museum, Nauticus (USN & civil), USS Wisconsin, not to mention harbor tours & the daily air shows.

This is Matt's Better half better known as Kelley. LOL. I told Matt of a really good military surplus store they have down there and he was sold. LOL. We found out yesterday that the Blue Angels are going to be down there but it's a few weeks after we go down and come back. I used to live there for almost 5 years actually so as long as things haven't changed much (which I doubt LOL) I pretty much remember where things are. I have a bunch of friends that are in the Navy down there so I don't think we will have a problem getting on one of the ships because they weren't doing tours last time I knew. I also know of a few museums in Portsmouth that's really cool that I think he would enjoy. But like I told him depending on my boss's decision we will only have a few days down there so we can do what we can and if we don't then we can always go down again sometime soon.

I also live in Va Beach. We have the Marine Science museum that currently has the USS Monitor be worked on. We have the Army transportation museum in Newport News and of course Aberdeen Proving Grounds is only about 4 hours away!

I should have contacted you guys while I was on vacation. I grew up in Tidewater, and we go to Sandbridge to our family cottage every summer for a week.

My favorites are the Mariner's Museum in Newport News, and Nauticus over in Norfolk, where the Wisconsin is tied up. The Virginia Air and Space Museum in Hampton is nice as well.

At one time there used to be a very nice museum over at the Naval Operating Base in Norfolk. Being retired military, I never have any problem getting on base, but I wonder if with all the post 9/11 stuff whether that museum is still there. Anybody know?

Tom
