It's more likely they'll have a Tombola Stephen. You know, where they have a drum full of numbers and you pick one out, the other half may/may not be attached to a prize. The chance of winning something are usually good and the money will probably go to a good cause. Have a go! If it's a straight forward raffle then the chance of winning are small but that's the idea of a raffle! You make a small contribution to a worthwhile cause and you might even win something! Try.

I usually partake of the raffle just for fun. Most times I breakeven or better. Yes, I have more kits than I can build in three lifetimes. But, the raffle usually goes to the club, etc so is going to keep our hobby alive. So join in and enjoy it.

My luck at random raffle drawings is very good. I've been to shows where a specific ticket is tied to a specific prize and to shows where you get your pick of a group of kits set out for that particular drawing.

I've never come away empty handed and I've never spent more than $5 worth of tickets.

My first and only raffle was at a show in Madison earlier this year. I got a raffle ticket for free just for entering a piece in the show, and then I had the good fortune to meet Porkchop (Nate) there as well. He was kind enough to buy me a grand prize raffle ticket along with one for himself.

Well the free ticket won me the chance to pick from a large stash. I walked away with a 1/48 Ki-43 Oscar. Then the suprise of all suprises was that I also got picked for one of the grand prizes! I was able to choose from several kits, and snatched up the Academy 1/32 FA/18-C. Not too shabby if you ask me.

And now that I'm mentioning it, I have to thank Nate again for the ticket!!!!!

So based on my experience. I'd definitely recommend raffles! And as others have mentioned, they help support our local modeling clubs.

Over the years, I've gone to shows, and sometimes had a very lucky day, leaving with a arm load of stuff from the raffles, other times I've left empty handed. But the same thing happens if I go to the casino, or bingo, sometimes you win, sometimes you don't. But at least at a show, the selling of raffle tickets, helps the hosting club, cover some expenses, and if these aren't covered, then maybe next year there won't be a show.

If I have to leave the show early, I normally give the tickets to someones kid that's going to be there for the drawings.
