Forgive me. I taught math in a former life:
Three travelers need a room, but there is only one left. It's a double, and the hotel manager charges them thirty dollars. Each pays him ten, and they head off to the room. Meanwhile, the manager feels bad about one of them having to sleep on the couch, so he sends his son up to the room with a five dollar refund. The son decides it would be easier to just give each man one dollar back, which he does. He pockets the other two.
Each traveler paid ten dollars and each received one back, so they each paid nine dollars. Nine times three is twenty-seven. The son kept two, which totals twenty-nine.
Where's the other dollar?

Its in the question.
They paid $10 dollars each.
They recieved $1 dollar back, which the question states that they now only paid $9. In fact they paid a total of $30, and got back $5 only the sone kept $2, meaning the toatl charged was a total of $25, so they actually paid $8.333333 each.
The way the question is asked throws the reader!

Hmmm...
No.
They did not each pay $8.3333. They did in fact each pay nine dollars. Their original ten minus the one they were given back. The trick is indeed in the wording. If they paid twenty-seven dollars, it's no longer necesary to add up everything to equal thirty-just twenty-seven. The manager has twenty-five, the son has two.
