Hello,

I read the athritis post and got a little concerned about myself.

You see, I have this habit of cracking my knuckles or fingers when I'm bored, anxious, excited, etc.

Is that harmful? Will it cause complications when I grow older?

Have to take care of my fingers/hands, you know, for more modeling.

I once read that cracking fingers can lead to athritis, i used to be the same all the time i would crack my fingers until i read that article. The only problem is you carry on doing it without realising

I heard the same about cracking joints. and apparantly the noise that you make is actually casued by the gas in your joints, dont know the medical name for it but when you crack you displace the gas in the joints.
Im a mine of useless information as usual!!

Martin is correct-it creates miniature "sonic booms" in your joints-and is totally harmless. One less less thing for moms to nag about...

you'd have a little more to worry about if you had more than 8 fingers (and more than 2 thumbs) !!!!

I was told that it had no effect, but before I posted that I wanted to be sure. Here is what I had found...

Arthritis Center at Providence Portland Medical Center: Likely not. I'm not saying "definitely no" because, while cracking knuckles is common, research on its effects is not. We have only a handful of studies on the subject. None shows a definite link between knuckle cracking and arthritis.

However, cracking your knuckles is neither harmless nor desirable. The arthritis connection may be an old wives' tale, but cracking your knuckles can hurt your hand in other ways, and there's no benefit to it. Some students crack their knuckles after writing a great deal, but cracking knuckles isn't a solution for writer's cramp. Instead, take a break, and bend and stretch out your fingers a few times.

Kids may develop a habit of cracking their knuckles because they like the sound. The "crack" comes because of a change in the synovial fluid, the lubricant that bathes the joints. When finger bones are suddenly stretched apart, the space between the joints widens, and an air bubble forms in the synovial fluid. The bubble quickly bursts and makes a sharp sound.

Id be more worried about hyper-extending the joint.. Either doing the old pianist type crack. You know the one, where you interlace your fingers, turn them palms out and CRACK... Or the old Im gonna thump you style.. One hand wrapped around the other.. Was a knuckle drag... uh, cracker for years... Decided after all I have, and will put my hands through (work), I needed to stop...
