Howdy All, Tread here

I have just recently come to terms with a small snag in my modeling 'world' and thought I'd try to rummage through the issue by sharing it with my friends here at the big 'A'.......hope you don't mind

As maybe some of you are aware, I've been away from the site lately because I've taken on a somewhat more total 'scratchbuilding' approach to my general modeling and have tried to invest what little time I have in trying to perfect those talents and research focus...anyway, what I have unfortunately discovered lately is, that I have contracted Arthritis. The most bothersome part of this is, that it is apparently in my hands as well....{sorry, no smiley that says what I'm thinking.....}

So, rather than Piss & Moan about this turn of events, I thought I'd ask my compadre's here at Armorama if any of you might suffer from the same ailment......I don't really think this subject has ever been brought up before. If it has, then I extend my apologies to you all for dragging you down the same path again..............

warm regards,

Tread.

To be perfectly honest with you all of you.....I'm hoping that none of you can identify, and that you are all free of this modeling pariah...............

Tread, not exactly arthritis but I fear that I may be in the early stages of carpal tunnel, which I'm sure feels just about the same. No constant pain but it does put a damper on modelling, especially when it comes to sanding, carving, etc. for long periods of time. So I guess you have at least some company when it comes to this subject, unfortunately. Best advice I can give is take breaks when it hurts. No use pushing your body's limits for a hobby.

PS How is that project of your's coming? It was the big Vietnam patrol boat with the RPG slats on it, right?

Hi Tread,
Yes, I have it in my hands. I take Aleave, and it seems to work as well as anything. A few years ago I gave up drumming because of it. My advice to you is to see your Dr. I haven't done so yet (I'm an ex Medic, and we make the worst patients, and never follow our own advice).
As for modelling, I just keep plugging along.
I hope you can too.

Tread,

I've got an aunt-in-law who suffers from arthritis, reumetism in various joints - including her hands - as well an eye problem (I think it might be Glaucoma) and she still manages to paint figures (Staddens), touch up and repair Britain's figures, repair and touchup Whimsies, and build N gauge railway layouts...

Here's a pic of a Stadden she did for me as a birthday present last year... it's the Chas C Stadden Captain Princess Louise's Argyll & Sutherland 1890 - painted by Anne Shackel

It's really *&%$!! for you and I hope it will not influence your hobby too much.
Rudi (Tarok) had a hopefull message about that, so I wish you can hobby on like his aunt-in-law still can.

I don't have arthritis as far as I know. But I often find my hands hurting the day after some severe modelling hours.
I do have very small wrests (for a man), so someone mentioned something called "carpal tunnel sydrome" (or something) but I hesitate to visit a doctor for it.
For all means it can be simple muscular pain.
Does anybody recognize such pain also?

@Kyle: You mentioned carpal also. Where do you feel the pain the most? In your hands, wrests or arms?
And is it during or after modelling?

Gordon, :-) :-) I was talking to my buddy last night before work, and we were comparing our arthur pains...... :-) :-)
Each year it seems to find a new place to develope. Got it in the knees, ankles, and lately my left thumb has been acting up.
Such is life when you spent most of your life kneeling on cement floors repairing things, and the hours holding tiny parts cleaning up seam lines etc........
Myself with the arthur legs, it's a catch 22---- flair ups I can hardly walk, don't walk... develope blood clots.... I'm becoming use to the pain I guess..... although I have found that the surgical support hose I'm forced to wear now.... (I look smashing in the speedo...... :-) :-) :-) ) seems to help with the aurthur also, the knee and ankle have not been bothering me, as much as before.

Just remember Gordon.... "we ain't kids anymore" and we need Tee shirts warning ---"watchout for falling parts"..... :-) :-) :-)

Howdy fellas,

Knew I could get some supportive comments from you bunch And I extend a big THANKS! to you all for stopping by and sharing them....
Also, to Grumpy...your chuckle made me chuckle :-) especially the 'support hose' comment.....geeeeeeeez

For the record, the Arthritis 'thing' is just an official notice, that's all. It's been getting worse for quite a while, and just finally had it checked out and that's what they said it most probably is....no worries though, I've been working with some type of pain most of my life, so a wee bit more just adds to the circus

Bottom line is, that I'll indeed be "modeling on", I'll just need to up-the-dose on the Ibu a couple more notches.

again, thanks for the thoughts fellas.

Tread.

Oh, and BTW Tarok, your aunt-in-law's work is inspiring, especially her tartan work

sorry to hear that tread!

i know how how bad it can be, my mum has arthritis in her back and all my grandparents have suffered from it.

my grandfather actually had to give up his hobbies of gardening and railway modelling due to a combination of arthritis and vibration white finger a few years back(he's a lot older than you though!)

anyway, what chance does arthritis have of slowing you down?

take care mate!
