Ok... I admit it. I visit other modeling web sites.

Today I finally got so tired of the pop-up attack on another popular armor forum and I followed some advice there and installed a so called pop-up blocker. Now I did this knowing that it might screw up other javascript based functions on other sites. Here are my observations:

At first it appeared that all was well.

Until I went to DigitalDioramas and tested Dave's enlarged image pop-ups. No go, you get forwarded to the homepage.

I came back here and tested mine. It worked at least. No small pop-up window but the image loads on a blank page in the same browser window. Wheew.

Then I was on CNN and tried to view one of their video files. Here:
http://europe.cnn.com/2002/WORLD/meast/10/24/iraq.journalists/index.html

The above wouldn't work at all. And using the pop-up blockers side door (hitting CTRL and SHIFT) launched a new window allright. It just has a bunch of javascript that won't exectue that way. Hmmm...

A word of warning. Install this "stuff" at your own peril. The Internet becomes more advanced everyday. One user on the forum I mentioned even recommended turning off javascripting (scripting) in your browser as a way to defeat the dreaded pop-ups. Yeah...you can do this. But the side-effect will be you cursing your brains out at another site when some shopping cart function or other non-popup item refuses to work.

Jim,

I have a better solution for beating pop ups. Encourage webmasters to run better quality sites like this one!!!

Someday the internet will "become more advanced" and webmasters will give up on the pop-up. There's nothing more irritating than a window that opens, when the user does nothing to cause it.

No Popups, yet another reason why I believe this is one of the best modeling sites on the net.

Keep up the good work..
Tim

You must be talking about Missing Links forum. When I visit the modern armor forum, at least 2, sometimes 3 pop up ads start pinging away. And then when you click a topic or go back they start again. It is very annoying and I only visit once a day because of it. Hyperscale used to be just as bad, but they stopped pop ups recently.

I still like this site better, no pop ups and relatively unabtrusive ads at the top of the page.

Pop ups, popunders, yeah bring back the good ol' days of just plain pop tarts. Another one of the hassles of ML is having to fill out info every time you go to post, jims way is much better. But I still stop over there as you can never have enough Info.

Track-Link is pop-up/under free too ;-)

Although Jim, wouldn't it be funny if we added pop-ups to the banners we carry for each other on our sites?

Well, i faced the same problem until recently with a news site that I frequent on a daily basis(hourly too ! The goddamn site used to pop up a ad window every time I clicked on a news item, and this used to slow me down terribly . Plus, it used to result in 6-7 addnl windows coming up by the time i finished all the articles.

So I popped over to CNET (pun intended ), downloaded a popup killer fron called 'Another IE Popup Killer', and I have lived happily since! It's just an icon in the System Tray, and it gets rid of these damned windows quite fast.

Nice to have these kinds of things handy. I hate it when a site keeps popping up all that crap, when i've just gone ot take a look .

Cheers,
BP.

BP,
Just an FYI but your sig image isn't coming through. You may need to set the Geocities account to allow outside viewing (or it may not work at all). You can probably see it as you are authorized via the cookie on your PC.

I use the NetCaptor web browser, and apart from many other features, it can block pop-ups. I also use the AtGuard personal firewall which can block javascript (and let you unblock it for specifed sites).

Amen to that! I hate visiting there on my dial up at home. At least here at work, uh at lunch of course the pop-ups come up quickly and get sent into the back ground.

Hi Jim,

I had that problem even earlier, and even I couldn't see the pic on my browser. I thought that others were able to see it, and I had to view it temporarily here to ensure that I myself could see it.

BTW, any idea as to how you can set a Geocities account to show up a linked file? I checked up in the Help, but nowhere is it mentioned . I am using the normal free account for my purposes, and dunno if remote linking is allowed...

Also, if it can't be done at GC, are there any other sites where I can put it up for free ?

Cheers,
BP.

Re: Missing Links

I no longer visit there from home. Here at work it's a different story, but we're waiting for the IT group (or what's left of it) to install one that'll deny the BS pop-ups but yet allow us to continue to work via the internet. Some of these pop-up stoppers cancel out the intranet.

Hyperscale has become my second favorite modeling forum....

Thanks,

I know of and hate the problems that are caused by trying to stop pop-ups. So I deal with them and close them (where possible).
My retaliation against pop-ups come from my wallet. I WILL NOT purchase, visit, acknowledge any pop-up advertiser. I visit the web site but not the company advertising.
Sure fire way of loosing me as a potential customer is to pop up!
They are the new age telemarketers and I don't care how much money you can save me, how good your product is, how much better I'll be/act/look whatever. P@#s me off and you don't get my money.

I used a popup killer for a while, but it also disabled functional website features, so I removed it after a few weeks.

Now what is that Missing Links forum everyone is talking about ? I think I remember that. There was a modeling site named like that in the stone ages of the internet ? I still had a black/white screen at the time ?!

Some of the ad serving companies are now allowing you to opt out of pop-up windows which they serve. While it won't stop all sites, opting out where possible does limit the amount of pop-ups one sees, especially from those damn X-10 and Comet Cursor folks. There is a quick selection of opt out links at http://www.hot-deals.org/optoutads/.

I've opted out of all that I can and only have to suffer through Angelfire, Independents and my news portal.

Just my two cents...

Thing might even get worse if you may believe this news on CNN :
http://www.cnn.com/2002/TECH/internet/10/21/pop.upspam.ap/index.html
Mind you, the message system of all Win NT based OS's (NT,200,XP), being used to spam people (I thought spamming was the worst thing!)
It might be wise to disable this feature! You can do this in the computer manager/services/messenger. Just select it-right mousebutton-properties and set start-up type to disabled!
That should safeguard you for this kind of B***S***!

What is bad about sites with a lot of pop-ups is that my computer is in the living room and a pop-up for some porno page jumps out One of my sons, and I think I know which one, must be going to those terrible placces Be glad when he finally moves out, so will his sisters!!!

I've been using EMS Free Surfer mk II . Got tired of the problems with the other pop up stoper. This one seems to work a lot better than the other.

I also hate sites that force their window the front if you have a couple of windows open. ML is bad for this.

I will not go to sites that lead to pop-ups. I shouldn't have to install some potentially flakey software on my Mac to avoid unsolicited ads. Banner ads are one thing but pop-ups are evil.

I read about those new forms of advertising using Windoze holes. Boy, it's too bad I use Macs...

TL, Hyperscale and Armorama provide more than enough information, so that I feel comfortable avoiding ML with its popups, spam-production side effects and extreme personalities. Armorama and TL are MUCH friendlier places!

you could try new a new Broswer like Opera...they have an option where it will block ANY popup ads for you still be fully functional. Only downside is that it has a adveristment in the free verison of the browser.
