I wanted to try my hand at making some molds and casting parts. I wanted to get opinions on what brands people would either recommend to use or stay away from. Thanks.

The November Issue of Fine Scale Modeller has a section on resin casting. You should give it a look.

If you are looking for the BEST in RTV silicone, I highly recommend BARE METAL FOILS RTC... they make a 50-50 (1:1) "Pink & Blue A+B" that is super to work with, fast cure, and very detailed... super stuff. I buy it 16 lbs at a time for $120 bucks... anyone wanna go in with me on my next order?

I can't advise yuo on brands, since European brands are generally not for sale in the US and the other way around. Try the yellow pages and look for a chemists shop. Anything with "resin", "silicones" or "mold making" can help you. Go there and ask advice. Some sell their products on the web. Search this "scratchbuilding" forum for previous posts. the issue has been discussed.

For molding techniques, I refer to the "xeroxing Ammo Boxes" article in the "/features" on this site, or try this fabulous Japanese Molding techniques website. Mr Mori explains all the tricks of the trade in Japanese, but the pictures are quite clear.

Good luck !

I just discovered another great web page that shows step-by-step instructions on how to make molds ! This one is less advanced than the Japanese link in the post above, but it it will take you a few weeks already to master all this !
