No laughing going on here. They're darn good for a first try.

My first kit was a 1/48th BF-109, manufacturer-long-forgotten. What I can remember is the thrill of it though. Watching this box of plastic bits grow into a semblance of a plane. No paint, just lots of glue. That was about 34 years ago and I wish I did still have it.

Note to all you young builders--keep your first kit. Whether it is hung up in your room, in an old shoebox under your bed, or up in the attic collecting dust, don't let your folks through it away. Don't blow it up with firecrackers. You can do that to your second, third, or fortyfifth kit.

The first kit I remember owning was a 1/32 scale Aurora hot dog vendor hot rod called "The Wurst". It was molded in red. My dad built it for me.

The first kit I remember assembling myself was the Aurora snap together Saber-Toothed Tiger.

The first glue together armor kit I remember building is the Aurora MBT70. I still have it although I rebuilt it about 6-7 years ago with a parts kit I acquired.

I don't recall the exact sub it was but my first model was a nuke boat, I built it all in one night after getting it for my birthday. I was probably about 10 at the time and man, I can remember how proud I was of it and looking back now I can remember I used a whole tube of non toxic glue to get it together. I would have been better off just spreading the glue in the box, shaking it up with the pieces and calling it complete one it dried. I wouldn't even show a pic of it now if I still had it for fear of being barred from this site, it was a monstrosity. lol

Did a couple more after that and got discouraged because I could paint worth a darn and then got more involved with sports and stuff. When I was in the service, one of my Sgt's was a darned good modeler and built a ton of different tanks. Got my interest giong again but it just stayed an interest unacted upon until last year when I found this site and the bug bit me. Now my wife laughs at the time I spend trying to get a kit together and how I always want to look for kits at the hobby shops. I tell her to blame it on my parents for buying me my first kit and this site for getting me off my butt to do it again.

My first model kit was the Revell "Hawaiian Pilot " Freighter circa 1956-57. I was 8-9 yrs old and my Dad helped me build it. Actually, as I remember I watched more than I glued. I tried over the past ten years to find the kit but it was a "rare" collectors kit that was very expensive.

Just recently, RevellOG re-released it and I got one a couple of months ago. I was digging around in my spares box and amazingly enough found the radar mast from the original kit. Hard to believe that such a small piece was still around after almost 50 years.

It will be the first ship kit I've built in over 30 years.

My first kit...well I was 6-7 so around 36 years ago, it was a snap togather Dinosaur. I remember winning it in grammar school, for what, no idea. For my first real build, it was one of those old 30's 40's cars. Came in a thin tall and long box. I don't remember who made it, I do think it was smaller then todays scales and it was a dull silver color. I do remember paying 49 cents for it. Funny thing, I was not able to have glue. But I was still able to build them. Now don't laugh it's the truth, I used gum to build my models for a few years, picture that No I don't have any of my first kits, though I wish I did especially some of the old race car kits from MPC

My first kit was a Messy 262, I think it was Matchbox. Remember those? I build a few of the Matchbox armour kits in 1:72 (1:76?) that came with the plastic 'diorama' bases, the Sherman is one that springs to mind... I would like to get another one of those again one day, 'for old times sake'....

Cheers

1/72 scale Airfix Hawker Hurricane IV, the original issue. It got painted gloss red with black stripes - including the canopy. No, I don't still have it - it was 42 years ago, and I was 7 years old when I made it! :-)

Hi all!

I don't know exactly what my first kit was but it was in a transparent bag and was made of silver plastic. I remember it had british roundels so I guess it was a Spitfire, a Hurricane or a Typhon. I didn't bother with the detail parts, just slammed together the fuselage and the wings with a LOT of glue and then put on the decals (the coolest part). I must have been 7 or 8 years old!
I made almost ALL Matchbox kits plus some Airfix and Heller kits and didn't kept one! I guess they all disapeared in some bombings... it's amazing how much kits I Build in my youth! But at this time it took me one or two days to finish a kit! And they were at 5 Francs at that time! Less than 1 Euro!

First fig -- 1/72 Hasegawa USAF CSAR team that came with the Nighthawk

First aircraft -- 1/72 Matchbox Sea Harrier

First truck -- 1/35 Tamiya SAS Pink Panther

Never made a ship.

Mine was a BAC Red arrows Hawk from matchbox (1/72). After building it had a not so clear canopy because of the glue fingers on it. It was unpainted and I got it for my 6th birthday.
It's gone now.

Considering that I was 6 years old when I built my first model - 34 years ago, I do not remember the kit, or manufacturer! I do have and remember my first Tamiya kit, the SAS jeep, which I purchased in 1974.

I think my 1st plastic kit was the MASH medick tent.

I don’t remember if it was my dad or grandfather who gave me the kit. I don’t even remember how old I was but I think it was before I went to school.

The kit had the tent some 3 people and a jeep. Surprisingly I still have most of it. The tent and the people were later added into the 1st dio I made. But sadly the jeep had been smashed at some point.

I believe I have a picture of it. Yes here it is bad panting and all. That’s the tent and people from the kit.

Luckily I have learned a lot over the years.

I am fairly certain mine was the Aurora MBT 70 kit. My older brother was working on "Rommel's Rod" or something, the staff car with the skeletons in it (anyone remember that?) so Dad picked up a tank for me.

I do remember my brother building the Tamiya 1/25th scale when it was first released, too. Of course, I did not get to build anything that cool because I was "too little."

No, I don't still have it. Too many years ago...

Mine was a jeep. I believe it was the Aurora Hogans Heros jeep. It came with all kinds of extras and me not knowing that you got to choose what you put on and what you left off, added every single piece to it there was. So it ended up with two steering wheels, multiple gear shifts, tires, hard and soft top and even included a few figures. I remember brush painting the entire thing red. It's in model heaven now. My mom still has my first airbrushed tank though. Italeri M-47. I got this when I was 12 or so. Man, that was a long time ago. "Q"

a Mitsubishi zero and a Messerschmidt Bf109. Both from airfix in 1/72 scale if i remember correctly.

And yes, I still have both! I have never dumped any model.

The first one I remember building was a German U-boat (I don't remember the type) that my father helped me put together when I was in kindergarten.

My first model was that red baron triplane. It was made from balsa wood and tissue paper that was hardening with some kind of coating.. (do they still make these?)

Heheh nice thread

Before I took the 1:35 road I built a huge load of 1:72 AC but when the turn was made I took all the planes and tossed them in the bin. My first 1:35 kit was a Tamiya Tiger I ( Not really sure which type) Built it and painted it OD. Keep in mind that this was in the very early stages of my modelling life and OD was the "Army" Color. Later came research and more kits and the Tiger got Discarded. I now use it as a test tank for different techniques. I still have it. I could make pics of it.
I also still have my first Diorama. Which I built with the BMW and Driver that came in the 88 Flak 36 from Tamiya. Pretty simple dio with a road and a little homemade roadsign. Piece of roadside with static grass etc. etc. I could make pics of that. Although it is really nothing it holds a personal value. As that is where it started for me like 10 years ago
