I was reading this, and they say this actually happened in 1995 between the US fleet, and the Canadian authorities on the 2 way.
Canadians: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the south to avoid a collision.

Americans: Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees to the north to avoid a collision.

Canadians: Negative. You will have to divert your course 15 degrees to the south to avoid a collision.

Americans: This is the captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert Your course.

Canadians: NO, I say again, you divert Your course.

Americans: This is the aircraft carrier US Lincoln, the second largest ship in the United States Atlantic Fleet. We are accompanied with 3 Destroyers, 3 Cruisers, and numerous support vessels. I Demand That You Change Your Course 15 Degrees North. I Say Again, That's 1-5 Degrees North Or Counter Measures Will Be Undertaken To Ensure The Safety of This Ship.

Canadians: This is a Light House. Your Call

I thought this sounded good enough to be true, and I figured some of you would like to read this, I know I got a good kick out of it..
I didn't know where to put this so I hope this is the right place, cause I never done something quite like this before.

LOL! Still a very good joke!
Unfortunatly (or not?) it's not the truth...

It's official denied on the US Navy site under the FAQ!
It's under the heading "Genealogy " / "Lighthouse Joke"
This are the life links to
the navy's FAQ page and to the official denial of the joke.

BTW. Why does the link to the "Philadelphia Experiment" not work on their FAQ page...

As I am reading this, urban myth or not, I find it astounding that for all the radars and sensors, they would not be able to "see" land. Oh well, good joke.

Jeff,
You would think, wouldn't you? Still didn't keep these guys from running into an uncharted seamount at 35 knots last January.
I am with you. I really didn't think things like that could happen anymore, given all the bells and whistles.

Now of course the navy would say this isn't so, nobody would brag about this, but how many big bombers have we had run into the cliffs on the east coast, that they knew the cliffs were there, they had radar, of course it was weather they couldn't see, but how can all the equipment go out at once to cause things like this. These were big bombers.

This is something that has happened to many planes, ships, or whatever, maybe for seconds, or minutes, or hours, who knows the reasons.

But what I was really wondering was, just how that captain planned on sinking that lighthouse.
