Congratulations on being chosen to host the 2012 games. That should be sweet.

no offence but bugger london, i'm living in the middle of war zone thanks too all the G8 protestors burning things down or smashing them up and all the media is commenting on is the ruddy olympics games of 2012 !

Give it time, London might come to envy you. They could very well be a "war zone" with the years of construction that is bound to happen between now and 2012, plus the crowds of people descending on them. It will make Williams 1066 trip look like a pleasure cruise.

Now I've got a good excuse to save up for a trip over there. Hmmm... seven years, I should be able to make it.

In 7 years, the prices will have at least tripled, to cover the cost of building the new stuff needed to impress the world, and don't forget the added cost of security.
I'm rather happy NY didn't get it, I can't afford the high taxes now, don't need more for the above reasons, plus trying to sneak a new stadium in under the cloak of the Olyimpics.
OH ... right I live in Jersey..... if the Port Authority has anything to do with it, in anyway shape or form, Jersey Taxes go up also, not just NY, and NYC taxes.
Just wondering where in London are they going to do all the building? Who's going to get their property taken? And where the hell are you going to put all the addition cars and drivers?
Double decker cabs?

Hi Dave, I live about seven miles from the proposed site and as far as Im concerned they can stick the Olympics right where the sun dont shine, couple of years ago they asked the local business people about a rate rise to help pay for it (they will be the only ones to profit from it) oh no they cant do that, so our rat bag of a mayor says the people of london can pay for it even though we pay the highest local taxes in england. now the business community are giving it there full support, excuse my cynicism? I dont know anyone in favour of it well amongst us ordinary joes that is, the rich and powerfull are crowing because there the only ones who can afford to go.

Phantom Major do us a favour if you get a chance throw an house brick at one of those protesters heads they did it to me in the riots down here in london it hit me in the mouth smashed one of my teeth and ripped the inside of my bottom lip to pieces the dental work cost about £400.00 and guess who had to pay for it.

I'm very wary of the Olympics and give a very cautious welcome, it'll be the whole nation that has to pay for it, not just London, but with no benefit for anyone outside east London. This will also see government backed investments dry up, with Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool promised new tram systems to ease car usage congestion, the government were hinting at a 'U' turn on these promises before, I think we've had it now as we know where all the nation's money will be going for the next seven years.

It's all well and good getting the Olympics, but higher taxes and slashed investment is high price to pay !

From what I've seen on the news it's not the genuine G8 campaigners causing the trouble.
It looks like the trouble makers who use any excuse to start trouble and have a go at the police.
Yobs with face scarf and hoods, aint they brave.

Let the police go in hard, break a few heads and legs,
forget political correctness.

P.S. I suppose our council taxes will go up to pay for the olympics.

I'm surprise that there seems to be such little support for London by Londoners. I thought the Olympics would be a good thing

The main benefits will be for the people involved in sport, as there will no doubt be more youngsters that want to get involved. Athletics especially will get a boost in schools etc that have ignored or reduced teaching/coaching due to lack of funds.

Of course there will be jobs created in the construction & tourism industries as well.

Me - I'll watch it on the tele same as usuall!

I can't for the life of me figure any reason to try to get the Olympics in your city. Overall, financially it is generally a losing proposition. Of course the land developers and building contractors make a fortune as well as all the under the table payoffs to the munincipal government. The local populace foots the bill with higher taxation that just kinda hangs around for several years afterward to finish paying for it. All the "jobs" it creates are mainly temporary and low paying to boot. I see this going on next door in Arlington Texas where they are building the new stadium for the Cowboys. They are "emminant domaining " about 90 houses over there, as well as another tax increase. They just finished paying off the baseball park a year ago too. Oh yeah, lots of jobs.....if you want to collect parking lot fees.
