O.K., I know this is silly to all the experienced modelers out that but I'm going to ask anyway...what is "white spirit"? Is it turpentine, mineral spirits, plain ol' paint thinner, alcohol, what?

I use it for cleaning dried paint off brushes. Works very nicely.

white spirits, mineral spirits and turpentine are three different chemical substances. All three are good for cleaning, thinning oil paints. All three may not work so good on enamels. I use mineral spirits because the odor is less pungent than turp. MSDS information is available on the web. Hope it helps
