Well u can use CAD or vector graphic progarms such as Adobe Illustrator or AutoCAD to plan your dios.
But hey - you could also draw the plans by hand. In my oppinion the 600€ (and often even more) for such a program are too much if you only use it do plan your dios.

Well and you could plan your dio by making a 3D plan of it with programs like 3D studio max, but it's the same as for the other programs: a lot of experience needed to geet good results and far more complicated than making your plans by hand.

Sir,
I would check for links at model railroader sites or Free/Share ware for programs such as RailCad 8 or Atlas RightTrack Freeware. Most are really based on model railroading but I can't think of one Layout that isn't just a large Diorama with trains.
Try these
Atlas

Model Railroader Magazine

Model Railroader is a poular railroad magazine that is published by Kalmbach Pub. who, incidently, does Fine Scale Modeler Magazine and the current Editor is FSM's old front man, Terry Thompson.
On Atlas' front page, on the left side is a bar with RTS Software. Click and download it. It is not a large program and with a little work, can be your saving grace. It is free. It is safe.

Check'em out and do a Google search for "Freeware for Cadrail 8 which is 3D. It is out there, I have it.

Hope this helps,
Cuhail
