Sitting in the drivers seat is a 10th-SS veteran, Gerhard Franzky, hes even in his dot 44 camo

We had a kubel at this, lucky for me, I hitched a ride a few times! Thats me in the back left seat.

You left-handed then?

Must make using bolt-action rifles a challenge

LOL If I would walk in those uniforms here in The Netherlands I had to spend a night in jail :-) :-) :-)
But serious, that are great looking pictures. And I'm always very happy to see a VW Kubelwagen in perfect condition and operational!
In what reenactment group are you in?

Excuse the question, but what do you actually do in that reenactment group? Just go out and "play" war (if you can say that) with blank cartridges?

Reinactors don't just go out and "play at war".. They are living history The uniforms and equipment MUST BE authentic from your boots to the top of your head. You must employ correct military tactics for the time frame. You also go through the same living conditions when you encamp, so no open coolers etc. I did American Civil War which is even tougher because of the ancient encampment conditions. We had to live in open air tents, cook in skillets on open fires. We were lucky in that we had a carpenter in our group and he made a wooden barrel with a cooler inside (no home-made / hot beer for us !) You literally step back in the past. Some folks really took it to the limits. Absolutly nothing talked about except era topics.

Great photos Harrison,

Did you ever get in contact with those folks about the machine gun? I haven't gone over lately to see if it's still there.

Guys thanks for the comments about the pics,
Our unit requires authentic gear and uniforms. We have to employ SS proper tactics also. When we camp it has to be period, I had to sleep underneath a tiger once in the snow. BTW, Steven, I did... I need a class 3 license for that thing and my parents wont allow me to get it. Its like $8,000 and only semi auto.

I hope you don't practice all "SS tactics"

"Sleeping under a tiger in the snow", well after a few too many "pops" I once slept with an elephant in University ... :-)

Great pics!

Cheers, Michael

I slept in a bundle of hay once in the winter, most of the rest of the time it was open air under a blanket. I have an authentic 1863 Sprigfield rifle. For Civil War weapons are much easier. There are a variety of rifles you can use, and replicas are readily available for under $500. Of course we get eaten alive with everything else we need from all the uniform parts to all the leather (acutrements ie cap box, cartridgebox) and just like you canteens, messgear, ) It isn't a cheap hobby, but after you deal with all the drilling and drilling and even more drilling and finally participating in a HUGE event. I wish my scanner worked and I could show you my pictures. I used to carry one of those little pocket cameras that I could sneak out and take pics of it from our standpoint. (I used to die a lot early in the battle to do this)
