Did you go to the cyclorama? It's been abour 15 years since I went there. Went up Culp's Hill, climbed through Devil's Den and up LIttle ROund Top where Col Chamberlain held the Union flank and won the day on a downhill bayonet charge when they ran out of ammo.

The first picture looks to be from Cemetery Ridge looking south along the Baltimore Pike and the next two looking east from Cemetery Ridge. I can't make out the next rwo. The cannon appears to be some sort of howitzer. The upper rifle looks to be model 1861 Springfield and the bottom a model 1853 Enfield.

Howdy fellas,

Thx for sharing the pics of Gettysburg Max. They really took me back. I know {or should say, knew} them well.
I used to fly heli-tours of the battlefield there back in the very early 80's. I have always been completely fascinated by the sheer volumn of visitors to this site from all over the world.
As I'm sure most of you know, it is one of the very best preserved battlefields in the world.

to Shermies:
Glad you were able to experience the cyclorama. I always liked that thing, even though the locals all despised it.
And for the record, the cyclorama was destroyed about a year ago.

to Al: I'm impressed by your knowledge of both the area, and the rifles.....

Tread.

Best "tour" of Gettysburg I had was while at the Army War College, because we had great AWC instructor guide. With some preliminary study, it was almost like a staff ride.

Highlight was to form our little group on line & walk Pickett's Charge, all the while the guide was talking up what happened.

Too bad that "developers" keep trying to encroach on what is a shrine.

It appears the building is going but the painting is being restored. Here's a February 2005 update from the National Park Service.

Gordon, were you thinking about the observatiobn tower? That was uniformly reviled and torn down before I went there in 2001.

I walked the Grand assault (commonly referred to as Pickett's charge). It definitely raises the hackles on your neck. One of the most memorable moments of my life. You can't go anywhere in the area without "feeling it". Even my little sister who went several years after I'ld been there stated she could feel it too.

I was there in either '02 or '03 (my memory is getting bad) and there was still an observation tower in the woodline on the Confederate side of Pickett's charge.

Walking around The Devil's Den and the left Union flank (on the steep rocky slope), is a feeling you must experience to understand.

Al,

these are guesses (it has been 8 years since I have been there).

Possibly the bottom one could be the Southern line looking towards Cemetery Ridge. The one above could actually be Cemetery Hill itself (going by I booklet I bought then indeed it is...) The statue is of Reynolds IIRC.

There was a small observation deck near the Seminary, but the one I was talking about is referenced here when it was demolislhed in 2000.

Awsome. Gettysburg is a great place to go. You can spend a lot of time there.
Looks like the weather was good for you.
